Recently I was going through my old LP's from when I was in high school. I pulled out one that I truly loved, Ballad of the Green Berets, written and sung by SSgt. Barry Sadler. That was along about 1966. I played that record till I drove my parents out of their minds (what little they had left after Steppenwolf and Jefferson Airplane and the Mamas and the Papas and such.
When I pulled it out, I played it for my grandkids and while they politely listened to Ballad of the Green Berets (having no idea of what it was about), they truly had fun dancing and laughing to Bamiba. It's true most of the songs on the album have sad undertones, but Garet Trooper is hilarious. Sadler was truly talented. I got to wondering what had happened to him and did a search. I came up with the following site and was sad to see that he had been killed in Guatamala in 1989 in a sensless manner. He did write and sing more music, but never with the success of Ballad of the Green Berets. He also wrote some books, which I'll be looking for. Such a sad ending..............
