Hey fellow Oakhurst people.
Just wanted to get YCR (formerly The Grind as you probably know) on the list of restaurants/businesses.
I am an employee there, and wanted to hear your opinions on the place. Everything you share here I will share with Don, the owner. Have any of you been down on Friday and Saturday nights for the tunes? Do you like the menu? The coffee is great (not biased on that, I was a well known customer before being employed there), but we would like to know how you rate the joint and what ya think. I thought about putting a poll up, but I figured having you just say what you think (be as honest has you want, no hard feelings) and not having to choose a few generic answers would be better.
Thanks all...
Is word association still going on around here? Hahaha..

FYI: There is another topic regarding the Yosemite Coffee & Roasting Company with a poll. The poll is linked from OakhurstRestaurants.com, so many tourists that plan vacations to Yosemite visit it. It would be better to post reviews (and responses to these posts) in the existing thread so that people will vote in the poll and more people will see the reviews.

i don't go there anymore, but you have to go! maybe we could meet up. i don't like it as much as i used to, but i'm sure coffee and food is as good as always, if not better.
It's just after shell on the 41 on the way to bass lake/mountain house/el cids.
If you're looking for a coffeehouse, well, it was my home away from home for years http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/grin2.gif

Hi, I passed on the poll question (food, price and service) because I guess I would have to average them out and that might be misleading.
First, I often go there because I like the place. But, I'd like to see it do better.
1. Food. It's OK, if you like "foo-foo" food. Throw a few burgers on the menu and I'd be happy.
2. Price and Service are fine.
3. You didn't mention music nites, but I've got a comments on that too. Unless you are going there just for the music, it's way too loud. Maybe just asking the musicians to turn down those amps would help. For now I avoid the place on Fri-Sat if I actually want to talk to whoever I'm with.
Best Wishes on the business. It's still way better now than under the last owners!

It's been a few months since I've been there. The coffee has always been good. I tried the food a couple of times about 2yrs ago, and havn't since http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/sick2.gif During warm/hot weather it's like an oven in there. Do they ever turn on the AC? I know its gone through a few different owners. Being a newbie to this Oakhurst Online community, I'm sure there has probably been much said on this forum before about one of the old owners, about the way he treated his employees. I personally witnessed behavior that made me amazed that he had any workers at all. Is that why it was sold?

do they ever change the furniture? Its all threadbare.. i remember the place being hopping all the time. i went on thursday AM and it was DEAD. and the coffee chick was bitching and complaining that shed rather be asleep in bed... damn. she ought to try 12 hour nites as a nurse on a busy unit... she has a CAKE job!
if ya dont like your job. dont piss.. quit.

I have control of http://yosemitecoffeeroasting.com/ since I devloped the site for the previous owners. The newer (current?) owners decided not to keep the site online, but the newest owners may see value in it...
Let me know if they want that web site.

Back in the day i used to spend a lot of time at the grind. Now after a few years, my wife and i have moved back to Okahurst to find the grind lacking life. We dropped by one night and the one employee working there had to turn the lights back on when we came in. It was about 90 minutes before they closed.
The furnature is the same stuff that has always been there, and i think that is a good thing. I haven't been to any of the music events in many years so i can't comment on that.
Coffee is great as always. The food that i've had was good.
Do they still actually roast coffee, or is the machine just there for looks now?
I'd love to see it being a hopping place once again, but i don't know what it'd take for that to happen.

In high school days, I was there every day. In fact, a lot of high school kids hung out there. Well, 'till we were kicked out by the owners (1st owners, I think). They even started calling the cops on us if we were there. They thought that the kids kept tourists away. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif
That's not what was keeping them away, however. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/nice.gif
Then they ended up with no kids or tourists. Too bad... it was a great spot. I understand that not all of the kids were buying stuff, but many of us did buy stuff there every day. They lost that business becuase they wanted another type of crowd.
Perhaps the new owners will not call cops on customers for loitering... but they'll need to encourage all types of crowds, even the current high school kids. They have nowhere to hang out I'm sure.
So, after we were kicked out of the Grind, we started hanging out at the park. Wanna guess what happened? Cops kicked us out of the park and posted "No Loitering" signs.
No loitering in a park? Only Oakhurst... not sure if they are still there.

As far as I know they were trying to get the HS kids back. I don't think it worked.
They have been nearly dead for a while.
As far as I know they still roast coffee! Every weekday morning from 6-8am.
There have been 3 owners since I was in High School. The second? owners foo-fooed the place out and ruined it for everyone...

Won't be going back there for quite awhile...
Went about a month ago... coffee was bitter. I always give a business another chance if I get bad food/service. Went back a few days ago, the Mocha was so bitter I couldn't drink it.
Their price is the highest in town. The young kid who served it up was un-professional and impolite.
Now that I think about it... I don't think I will EVER go back there again.

Uhhh--nooo.... I was the only one there ordering.
There was a young couple and kids sitting at a table... and maybe one or two others sitting around the place. This was a Sunday afternoon. The "cook" walked up the "barista" while I was receiving my mocha (with not so much as a thank you) and joked(?) that he couldn't believe that he was asked to work at that time, or something to that effect. They were so interested in talking to each other, http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif
that I didn't bother asking for whipped cream on my mocha- which it didn't have. I feel If you're paying nearly 4 bucks for a coffee drink they should at least ask the customer their preference... http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/veryangry.gif I ended up pouring it down the drain anyhow.
There are plenty of better coffee houses in town that will get my money instead. I'm bummed because they are located closest to my home... http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/disappointed.gif

The restaurant has been purchased by Chris and Carol Russell, owners of Mystical Fire next door. It is in the process of major remodeling, including an opening to mystical fire. Chris and Carol have extensive business experience, and I think we will soon see Yosemite Coffee and Rosting come back better than ever.

Rather than start a new post, I decided to bump this one. Yosemite Coffee has indeed been reborn. It's now better than ever! Last night was the grand re-opening party and featured live music from Good Medicine. Great crowd, great music, and a great time. Same old great coffee, of course. The new cook is a fellow named Lars, formerly of Elderberry House (!) so you can imagine how good the food is! Chris and Carol have done an outstanding job of reviving the place and have lots of plans for the future, including live music every Saturday nite. They've also applied (and I believe granted) a beer and wine license. The plan is to serve wine and micro-brewery type brews. I can't wait. Also, they've assumed the lease for a space next door, formerly occupied by Reno's Music, which will be turned into a small bookstore, and all three units will be opened up. If you haven't been there lately, you don't know what you're missing! Stop in you'll be pleasantly surprised (probably shocked) at the new look, many great and very nice new employees, great food, wonderful ambiance. Maybe I'll see you there.

I went to the Grand Re-Opening. And I had an enjoyable time. Good Medicine put on a great gig. Really got the house rockin'...well, boogie-in'. I didn't partake, but enjoyed being a spectator. The coffee was great. My kids loved their ice cream.
I had never been there before. With my in-laws in town, thought we'd go check it out. The place seemed freshly painted in vibrant colors...the furniture was vibrant and inviting. It had the makings of really cool place to "hang". Didn't order any food having just pigged out at El Cid...but other people's food looked fresh and delicious. The owner did offer us a sampling of a "wrap"...and it was very good. Prices were excellent...only cost us under $10 for three coffees, a Hansen's canned smoothie and two small ice creams. Was this because of a grand-opening special...or everday menu prices?
Even though they are officially "open"...they don't seem altogether ready yet. No menu-boards up, no restroom signage. Just little things I noticed. Maybe they're just waiting for these things....but it made ordering and navigation to the restroom cumbersome.
Overall, I think the place got off to a great re-start! I would go back.

It is no longer someplace I want to hang out, then again I have not wanted to hang out there much (besides when I was employed there-I was paid to) since High School.
I have trepidations about it staying open in it's current state. There don't seem to be that many new age type hippie type people in this town... but then again what do I know?? I hope that the bookstore they open has several different varieties of books-- not just the sort that Mystical Fire carries... but I am loyal to my Book Peddler in Coarsegold.
Anyway, thought I would give my .02 because that is what the forums are for, and I am entitled to my opinion.

That is a great idea. I can't speak for them, of course, but I bet they'd be very receptive to a local photog show. In the third photo above you can see a number of framed photos all by a local photographer...sorry I forget his name...I understand the idea is to rotate local photographers' work through this room periodically...so I bet your idea would fly. Chris and Carol are very nice folks and seem to be open to ideas and suggestions to help make the place better and better. You should stop in and run it by them.

"Starbucks where the drinks are always perfect and the help friendly"
Uh what???
Nevermind. Anyway you should go to Sierra Coffee if you dislike The Grind (always "The Grind" to me) that way you are supporting local small business and not a conglomerate crappy buisness that is a Walmart of coffee (I should know I used to live in Seattle!). I find that Sierra Coffee, though they don't have the great food The Grind does, (but then again niether does StarChucks) they have great service, and the best thing is that they are pretty steady with service and quality. They will have a drive thru in Coarsegold and I hope that people will drive thru there instead of the "new" Starbucks that is coming.
Plus they have GREAT Smoothies at Sierra Coffee... Mmmmm with real fruit and stuff only $3.25 and so worth it!

I'm not picky about my coffee, I like starbucks because its convenient for me and since I shop at vons at least 3 days a week. I have always had fast and friendly service there. i dont usually go out of my way to get special coffee drinks.( too expensive anyways) i have my usual Yuban at home and I'm content, but I walk into Vons and that temptation to have that extra energy burst kicks in. I like Rudy's and usually always stop there when heading to Fresno.

I only drink vanilla lattes (not now of course!)...
I grew up with a father who drank Sanka... yuck.
I can't drink my coffee black unless it is flavored some how.. and I love that junk food crap that comes in a bottle.. what is it called.. it is artificial 1/2 and 1/2.. mmm vanilla.
I always find that Starchucks has too much flavor, too slow... But the Starchucks at Von's has its upside.. sometimes you go to get that double shot or whatever and it is free! Free!! It is the "you have endured 7 cups of our coffee you get a free one deal!"
Haha Von's deli kicks butt though. Mmm.. I am hungry.

I think it would be a good thing if she read this.... you're not trying to make a personal attack... OK, well, you were for a bit, but that doesn't seem to be the case overall.
How can there be improvement if they may not be aware if something isn't right? They're new. Now is the time to mention such things.

Yeah... I hate it when people are rude or whatnot.. which is why I started the Oakhurst Cleaners topic.. Maybe you should go in once more and if the Owner is there you could pull him/her aside and tell them what specifically happened. Or call down there and ask to speak to the owner. That way you can be semi-anonymus.
No one deserves to be treated like crap. One of my pet peeves is when no one tells me "Thank You" for shopping or eating where they work. IMHO it is only common sense to say "Thank You" when someone buys something or heck even if they come in to browse.

The owners are Chris (him) and Carol Russell. They're very nice folks and have done a lot of work and are working hard to make The Grind/Yosemite Coffee an outstanding place. I think they've done wonders so far, but they're far from finished and it's getting better all the time. I've spoken with Chris about OO members meeting there perhaps one night a week, and he's all for it. I've emailed him the addy for this forum, so I expect he'll be reading all the comments, good and bad, and woudln't be surprised if he posts here. As far as poor service, I've been pleased with the service, but keep in mind, they're still getting everything in order, lots of new equipment, new people, and things don't always go according to Hoyle. Besides, everybody has a bad day now and then. I'm stoked about this place-Oakhurst has badly needed something like it for so long. I've sampled a number of food items and the food has been excellent without exception.
You can always find something to complain about, I suppose, but I try to stay on the sunny side of the street.

First of all...I'm not a complainer, unless I have good reason to. I agree the place looks great, but the service from the same person the last 3 times sucked. Thats it..A friendly " Hi, how are you today can I help you?" thats not too much to ask. It was her overall attitude..like she hated her job.
Sorry, Wait.... no I'm not... just my opinion is all...

I think you're more than entitled to your opinion. If i had received the same service you had, i would have definitely talked to the owners. In fact, i had done so with the previous owners because of the things employees were doing.
I'd like to think that if there was something not right in this office we'd have it brought to our attention by the person offended.

Actually, I see more of my friends while I'm at starbucks. I shop there all the time it's convenient for me.I dont have a lot of time to sit and chat..when I get a latte it's usually because I have a crap load of stuff to do and need a lift.. I like the yosemite coffee roasting, don't get me wrong,It's just that the service has sucked for me... get it? thats my point...I'm not comparing the two. If you go to a restauraunt and spend your hard earned money, and the service Sucked, would you go back and eat thier food just because the seating was comfortable? not me. There are several places I've gone to that the service was terrible and I never went back....I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way..

Makes sense to me. I can't drink coffee anymore, so that's not an issue for me. But i lived with two starbucks employees for a while, mind you that was years ago, and have had a grudge against starbucks ever since. I have to admit i've never complained directly to a starbucks. But if for any reason i'm there i'll stare at someone rude until the look up and smile until they do. Or i'll clean up the sugar/creamer area. I will point out if there are ants or something. But i avoid the corporate coffee infestation like the plague. Or like an infestation. Yep http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wink420.gif

I can't wait to check out the place. I have actually been TOO busy to get up there. I really hope that they are receptive to local musicians and photographers. Starbucks is good for a passionfruit iced tea, but other then a nonfat cap now and then... i don't drink much from there.

update on the service at Y.C.R.
I went in there the other day with a friend of mine and guess who was working? I thought... oh boy! Well, she was actually pleasant this time. She made a wonderful caffe late with a shot of sugur free hazelnut for me. and later, I complimented her how good the Latte was she made. I was content.

I stopped into Y C R H yesterday.. and got a cap... it was excellent. and the service was good. I thought that they did a really good job at re decorating. The place looks really nice inside.. no more tattered tables and couches... but nice pics on the walls and new couches and chairs to sit upon.
good work Chris and Carol.

Yep, I saw her there today... I don't think she knows I am me.. though, she might..
Anyway I don't care for another person who works there.. and since they are getting a beer/wine license I will not be going back. Plus, they have raised the prices...

I like the idea of them getting a beer and wine license. I just hope it doesnt turn into anything bad. I used to go to this really cool coffee house in Templeton, Ca... where they did coffee, sammies, snacks, bagels, and Local wines. it was really pleasant to just sit, read, have a coffee, tea, sammie.. or a good glass of wine. I hope it goes well....
i thought that the staff was rather friendly at Y C R
