Hubby had a delivery, and went passed the accident scene.
He was later told that a woman had gone into a diabetic coma, ( possibly trying to make it back home for her insulin ) and was unable to maneuver the corner ~ :(

Thats all I have heard ~ and do want to add that this is NOT any type of "official" report !!
Thank you.

Ahwahnee Woman Killed In Car Crash

Yesterday morning, at 8:10 am, witnesses reported a woman in a grey older model Toyota Celica driving very erratically northbound on Hwy 49 from redbud near Oakhurst. She reportedly tried to pass a slower vehicle on the right, then lost control of her car into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Carol Cramer, 57, of Mariposa. Ms. Cramer took evasive action to avoid the impending head-on collision by swerving to the right and then back to the left as quickly as she could. Carol Cramer was unable to maintain control of her car and it rolled onto it's right side on the east shoulder of Hwy 49 south of Harmony Lane. According to the CHP report, the driver of the Toyota, later identified as Charlotte Barnett, 40, of Ahwahnee, continued northbound, still driving erratically. She lost control of her vehicle, for reasons still under investigation, and allowed her vehicle to leave the west side of the highway. The vehicle struck a tree, killing Ms. Barnett instantly. Though Ms. Barnett was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision, due to the impact, she did not survive. The other driver was also wearing her seatbelt, and was uninjured. It is unknown if the victim was impaired by a physical ailment or other causes. which is currently under investigation by the Madera County Coroner's Office.

A motorist died early this morning when his car was hit by a vehicle driving the wrong way on Highway 41 in north Fresno, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Dustin Malanca, 20, of O’ Neals, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu north on Highway 41 near Friant Road at 12:17 a.m. when he was struck by the wrong-way vehicle driven by Susan Nilmeier, 54, of Fresno, according to the CHP.

Malanca was pronounced dead at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, the CHP said.

Nilmeier, who suffered moderate injuries, was transported to Kaiser Permanente hospital in north Fresno.

The CHP is investigating the collision.

Man killed in crash; 3 women injured

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

By Elizabeth LaRochelle

California Highway Patrol/Special to The Madera Tribune

One man was killed and three women were injured in a crash Tuesday on state Route 41 north of Avenue 12.

The name of the 71-year-old man, who died at the accident, was not released. The women - Arlene Alvarado, 27, of Armona; Angelita Walhting, 43, of Lemoore; Lizette Lawson, 31, of Lemoore -were taken to Community Regional Hospital with moderate to severe injuries.

"Amazingly the women were all alive," said California Highway Patrol officer Anthony LaNotte. "The driver of the Dodge was talking and alert when they cut her out of the car and put her into the ambulance." He said they were all expected to survive.

LaNotte said that around noon the southbound man in a 1998 Toyota Corolla veered into the northbound lane of SR 41.

"Witnesses said that the Toyota had not been driving recklessly," LaNotte said. "He did not appear to be weaving or speeding before the accident."

The three women in a 1996 Dodge Intrepid were in the lane and the car was hit head on, propelled into the pasture and landed on its roof.

"Drivers of both vehicles had to be cut out of the cars using the jaws of life," LaNotte said.

Alvarado was the driver of the Dodge, and the one whose injuries were major. CHP reported that Walhting and Lawson received moderate injuries.

The CHP is still investigating the accident.

I don't believe the road, and the truck driver are soley to blame, if at all.

In my (not so) humble opinion the Highway Patrol who was on site for what I understand to be quite a while, 10 minutes or more, should of put up flares, had someone (another officer, or even a layman) at the top of the hill (at least a half mile before the back up) to slow and stop traffic.

It is absolute neglect and a combination of several things (tragic coincidences perhaps) that caused this accident.

On the case of the road itself, come on. This is Madera County we are talking about. How long did it take them to upgrade the traffic lights, or heck, put in turn arrows at 49 and Sears/Vons intersection? How many people had to be injured in that intersection before the county figured out people don't know what a right of way is, and to put up the additional light? How about Spinelli and that turn in the middle of a passing lane, fast downward traffic? That has been a hazard for years, but until recently (and this is with fingers crossed) nothing was done.

Hello all

I have followed this for a while and it was really a sad accident.I was in no position to post until this came to some closure.alot of the facts that were posted in alot of places were incorect .This was a combination of several factors leading up to this accident.Just F.Y.I that truck did have G.P.S in it and it clearly showed that the driver was not speeding. My first post here and is getting late will post again soon.

Road hazards
Editor's Corner
By David Richards
(Updated: Friday, May 30, 2008, 9:49 AM)
www.sierrastar.com

You wouldn't know it from the recent weather trends, but summer is only roughly three weeks away.

The recent moderate temperatures here in the mountains, complemented by the rain that splashed down this week, have felt more like early spring weather than the blazing hot air we're used to.

Nonetheless, summer is coming, which also means that school will soon let out for all of our local students.

With tourist season here and with the school year almost over, it is now of the utmost importance to slow down and watch your speed through our mountain communities.

Our roads are difficult enough to drive on when there is very little traffic, but add young people running around and bus-loads of tourists, and we have a recipe for disaster if we don't do our part and slow down.

All too often we are in a hurry to get to the store or to work or to a friend's house and forget how tricky our roads can be to drive on.

If you have to be at a specific place at a specific time then leave a little early. It's not worth the risk of your life or the lives of others to be reckless.

Have a safe summer and please slow down.

The issues above are discussed and chosen by the Sierra Star editorial board, made up of Betty E. Linn, publisher, and David Richards, editor.

Driver was Jared Marr. he was driving home after Sober Graduation.
It was a head on with a large Ford Pickup.

He was airlifted to Fresno Medical Center.
He has been in the ICU. He had many injuries including Broken Femur, fractured hip, and elbow. He also has a head injury. He has been highly sedated to keep brain swelling to a minimum, and has been in a coma like state.

Today he squeezed his mother's hand on command!

Family is asking for continued prayer.

There may be some fundraisers in the works. There is an account set up for Jared at Golden One Bank.

I'm so tired of people coming over the doubleyellow line at me. Not to pass another car, just being lazy or drifting over or cutting a corner just so... I now expect it and ready for it.

Tonight the 415 was paved from just past Gold Creek (I think is the name of the street) to at least 416 (Spinelli) if not further on only one side leaving a 2 inch lip and NO painted line - be super careful on this road tonight! No one will be able to tell where the middle is and if someone is going too fast, they are going to catch the lip throwing them into oncoming traffic (and around blind corners also).

Prayers for those hurt in these accidents have been said.

Road delays
(Updated: Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 5:11 PM)
from www.sierrastar.com

Road construction is now under way in two locations that may affect Mountain Area residents.

The Madera County Road Department has started work on a project at Road 200 that will involve reconstructing and realigning roughly 3.4 miles of Road 200 beginning just past Spring Valley School and extending toward North Fork.

According to a statement from project manager Jared Carter, the project is the first phase of a two-part reconstruction and realignment project, which is part of the voter-approved Measure A program. Construction is anticipated to be completed by late 2008 or early 2009.

Also this week, the California Department of Transportation announced the start of intermittent reversing lane control operations in order to implement a traffic signal and shoulder excavation operations on Highway 41 and Highway 145. Work on Highway 41 will occur Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., while work on Highway 145 will continue seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The completion of the project is anticipated in mid July.

According to a Caltrans statement, delays at this intersection are expected during the next four weeks.

Local teen injured
www.sierrastar.com

An Oakhurst teenager received major injuries following a two-party crash on Road 415 north of Road 416 June 12 at 7:38 a.m.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, Jared Marr, 18, was extricated by CalFire from his vehicle and airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Fresno. The other party, Andrew Douglas, 23, of Chowchilla, received minor injuries.

Reports indicate Marr was traveling northbound on Road 415 in a 2007 Saturn just north of Road 416, while Douglas was traveling in a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck southbound on Road 415 north of Marr's location.

The crash occurred when Marr entered the curve and was unable to maintain his position within his lane. Marr crossed into the opposing lane of traffic and into the path of Douglas' vehicle. The vehicles collided head on.

According to reports, both parties were wearing seat belts; neither party was arrested.

Jared's condition continues to improve.

He has not opened his eyes yet, but Dr's are hopeful that he will anytime now. He has responded with movement on command.

The extent of his brain injury is still undetermined.

He is in a lot of pain from his other injuries. He is still in CCU.

hi,

I agree. There are plenty of excuses in the world, but nothing can erase responsibility.
It's too bad people see things as legal or illegal, rather than what is right and what is wrong.
I saw the cars from the accident on my way home from work. It was awful. One of my friends said they had to amputate the lady's leg in order to remove her body from her car. What does it take for people to stop drinking and driving? It just breaks my heart.

You know how they print pictures of missing children on milk cartons? Maybe they should put pictures of drunk driving accidents on beer cans and Liquor bottles. it may just save lives. Who knows, just a thought...

Good idea, Newcomer. When I was in high school, they used to bring a car that had been totaled by a drunk driver to the campus. It always made an impact on me.

Drinking and driving is just plain stupid. And I'll admit to having done just that. I haven't done it for a great many years, but I did do it! So, it's difficult for me to just point the finger and forget it. Perhaps we should ask why it happens so much and try to provide alternatives for people.

Social pressure and fear of consequences will help some, but it'll take more than just that. I suspect very few people ever drink with the intent to get drunk and then drive home. When you have people that want to socialize over a drink at a public establishment and then having to find a way home in an area where there is no affordable public transportation you are going to have these problems.

Maybe when we issue a license to sell alcohol we should require some sort of subsidy (tax) to help support a taxi, bus line, or an on-call designated driver. Maybe there are better ideas out there, but just shaking our head isn't going to change anything.

When I was a senior in high school one of my best friends for her senior project did the "Every 15 Minutes" program. They have Grim Reapers go around and take a few students out of classes, like they were killed in a drunk driving accident. You don't see them for a day or two, then they have a fake car accident with all the emergency crews there, and then a funeral the next day. It was something that really opened up people's eyes, I think.

With my dad being a tow truck driver, I see accidents all the time. I remember when I got my first car and we were fixing it up so it would run, he showed me a car just like mine that had been involved in an accident. I think it was even a drunk driving accident. Anyways, there was hardly anything left of the car... It kind of scared me and it totally made me realize how careful you really need to be behind the wheel. It's horrible that people don't seem to think about what they are doing...
