VISALIA — Police say a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy arrested Friday on suspicion of abusing a 16-month-old child were living together as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Amanda Broyles, 19, was charged Monday with child abuse and unlawful sex with a minor in connection with abuse of the baby and her cohabitation with the boy, according to the Tulare County District Attorney's Office.

Police believe the 14-year-old injured both Broyles and the baby. Police officials say Broyles was arrested because they believe she allowed the abuse to occur and the child to suffer. She also suffered from bruises and burns.

Prosecutors declined to comment on what charges they may bring against the boy, citing his age.

Police were called Friday afternoon after an ambulance brought the baby to Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia for treatment of breathing problems, said Visalia police Sgt. Jim German.

Medical staff at the hospital found severe bruising on the baby's back and abdomen, and moderate bruising around the neck and face.

The baby was transferred to Children's Hospital Central California for treatment of a lacerated liver, according to hospital officials. Broyles and the boy were arrested Friday.

German said the child was in stable condition and didn't appear to have any head injuries.

He said the 14-year-old is not the father of the child, but he took care of the infant.

"A sexual relationship between a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old-boy is a crime," German said. "There's something wrong when you have an adult and 14-year-old living together." He said detectives are trying to determine how the boy came to live with Broyles.

German wasn't sure of the boy's family situation before the alleged crime.

Assistant District Attorney Carol Turner said the case was unusual.

"It's almost child abuse," said Turner, of the relationship between the boy and Broyles, adding that the boy seemed to be the abuser in the case.

The boy was booked into Juvenile Hall and Broyles was booked into Tulare County Jail.

I hope they don't end up returning that baby to its "mother." But even if they place him elsewhere, she will no doubt keep cranking out more unfortunate babies. She oughta be sterilized.
