Does anyone know anything about the old stagecoach road
to Wawona off of 49 between Oakhurst and Mariposa?
I believe there were 2 different routes. Do they still go
through to Wawona? Are they paved? Why was the name
Fresno Flats changed to Oakhurst? I read that a supposed
stagecoach robber's wife got it changed because she didn't
want her husband's name involved with Fresno Flat.

Chowchilla Mountain Road still goes into Yosemite/Wawona--though I have heard it is now gated on the Yosemite side now. There might be members here that would know for sure. The road is not paved all the way through and it is actually reccommended not to travel that road in the winter and spring...but there are experienced off roaders that do.

I there use to be a local history thread here. Try using the search option here for what it is you need. And, often times when Googling Oakhurst history the search results will lead you back to threads within these forums.

The road still goes through. We explored it a couple of years ago in fall, when there had already been a little rain. It's dirt, parts are steep, and it was pretty muddy.

Yes, there's a gate. I've been told that it's open in summer but gets closed as soon as the weather gets questionable - it was closed when we visited. We've wanted to go back again, but I think missed our chance for this year.

A co-worker of mine took this road in a sedan last week. The road is apparently in good shape this year, probably because of the dry winter last year. As long as you don't mind dust it is a pretty neat trip.
