Anyone else feel that earthquake? Rattled our windows, but I never would have noticed it if the house was not completely quiet.

Timing's right - that musta been what set off all the alarms that had the sherriff's deputies rollin' out of Valero while I was getting gas.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

There have been several little earth shakes as of late. Where my place is situated...I hear them instead of feel them.

Didn't feel a thing... hmmm - not far from here - but it was a little one 2.4 "microquake" they called it.

When I'm in the Bay Area, I usually never feel them unless they are over a 6. The valley soil seems to dampen the shake until it reaches a certain point, then ampilfies it with the bigger ones.
The "Big Quake of 1989" made the valley ground undulate, I actually saw and felt the rolling wave action while standing in a parking lot. The rolling-reverb lasted alot longer than the initial big jolt.

I only feel them when they are 3.5 and higher. I'm surprised that small of a quake rattled the windows. Maybe it was directly underneath you.

Our house is on the second story. Seems like we feel all of them because of that. I heard the rattle and checked the quake website....and was amzed that such a small earthquake had an effect.

Did you hear that low rumble and windows shaking... in Coarsegold heard it.

Thought a quake, but no earth shaking...

Sonic Boom? No, too long...

was a few seconds long...

Volcano going off in Mammoth??? (hopefully kidding).

Anyone know what it may have been?

WoW! I grew up in California, but that was the noisiest earthquake I've ever heard! Is that normal for around here?

Felt it pretty good over by the rodeo grounds. It felt much stronger to me than it should have for a 2.9 that was at least 10 miles away. Maybe it felt stronger because it was so deep & the waves could have been deflected at an angle like they did in the Loma Prieta quake. I'm on a rock outcropping too. I feel more EQs than my neigbors do who are on sandy soil.

Wow....I heard it all the way over here in Prather. I agree that it seemed like it was pretty loud for a measly little 2.9! Tocools was working on the well at the time and I worried that something had blown up. He says he didn't hear or feel a thing, though.

I heard something, but thought it was just another glop of heavy snow sliding off the trees onto the roof.

Those coordinates place it roughly at the valley/foothill boundary, although at almost 9 miles down it's still going to be well below in the bedrock of the NA plate.

A couple years ago there was a 3.8 centered 8 miles due south of Oakhurst, but near the same depth as this one.

One can only hope it's just some settling going on and not a rising thermal plume... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

Having moved here from Mammoth, I got so used to the ground shaking all the time!! That whole area, the Long Valley Caldera, Mammoth is just a chimney for...it's not even where the big magma pool is. It's one of those supervolcanoes like Yellowstome...if that sucker goes, we are ALL doomed! The monitor it SO close, you can go on the USGS website, and there's a whole section dedicated to the Long Valley Caldera...

we heard it too. I thought it was a big semi truck racing down the parkway. They can shake my house. What confused me was the noise. It was loud.

Since moving up here, I hear almost all the earthquakes before feeling them. I just figured it had to do with my living in the river basin and how sound travels in between mountains. After reading everyones posts, I am kind of bummed that I slept through yesterdays quake.

ok I felt it ..who else did?

OAKLAND, Calif. (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck in a rural area about 15 km northeast of San Jose, California, Silicon Valley's biggest city, on Tuesday night, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The earthquake was felt across the San Francisco Bay Area just before 8:05 p.m. There were no immediate reports of major damage but the San Jose Mercury News Web site reported phone service failed in a part of Palo Alto, home to Hewlett-Packard computer company and Stanford University.

It said the quake caused minor damage and residents poured out of apartments in downtown San Jose to survey the damage.

"It was pretty significant. you could actually hear the rumbling of the ground. It was a good shake," said Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police Department.

Asked about damage, he said he knew of "nothing other than things tipping off cabinets and dressers."

The quake occurred at a depth of 9.2 km, according to the USGS.

I was in Fresno at my son's and we never felt it, and never noticed the dogs and cats getting excited either like they usually do if there's an earthquake.
