NEED SHOPPING HELP TODAY!!

This upcoming week is the last week of the semester at my daughter’s college and to ease some of the stress for Freshmen the residence hall director has a SURPRISE party planned for the dorm on Thursday.
Us parents received letters asking that a little bit of ‘love’ in the form of a gift for each student be sent in care of the director to be handed out at that party. I found on Friday that my gift could not be sent UPS and to go via US Mail was going to cost $59 to send a $35 gift. YIKES!
I’ve planned now to save that for an actual Christmas gift to be given here at home when she comes but I’m not happy about looking like a ‘loser’ of a Mom when she has nothing at the party.

I slept on it, two nights now, and now know my only solution is online shopping to get it there in time and I have an idea but I can’t find it. When Rachel and I came to CA and it was her and I trying to survive after my marriage died, we identified strongly with the mother/daughter characters, Loralei and Rory, from the TV show Gilmore Girls and we decided we needed to have an OUR SONG and it was/is I Got You Babe.
Can ANYONE help me find ANYTHING musical for under $50 – a music box, stuffed animal, picture frame, whatever that plays the Sonny & Cher song – I GOT YOU BABE?

Couldn't find anything on my usual shopping sites or their affiliates, but I came up with a couple of these sites... might just work..., you'd just need to get started quickly, and possible find a store in her area which would do the recording for you... Just a suggestion....

I have been searching on music box sites, gift sites and ebay, but can't find anything with "I Got You, Babe." I will continue to look around. I know you need it by Thursday...all I can find so far is the song on records and CDs. I am wondering if Hallmark has anything. Maybe you can even put together one of those custom greeting cards that allows you to choose a tune. I don't know how to do it but I am sure the store owners or employees can help.

Perhaps the song you want is part of a list of songs available for those cards. Then you could always tuck something small into the card, such a necklace. Or, just have the card attached to any other type of gift. I might be able to help you with the shipping costs. Just send me a PM.

Thanks for the suggestions and help guys. It was a good idea - might still be for Christmas but can't get done in the time left and I squirreled away practical productive time for getting anything else done looking so instead of the perfect "I love you/miss you/am always thinking of you token" it looks like I'll just appear to be a loser/don't give a %$#@ parent on Thursday in Michigan. What's new?

Sorry for the whining...feel like crap.

Send flowers or other what-nots via teleflorist or 1 800 flowers. They have all sorts of gifts not just bouquets. Put the lyrics on the card attached.

Great idea, BGW.

SheilaMae...tut-tut!! You??? Look like a loser parent? Not in a million years, gifts or no gifts.
I like the flower idea, because flowers are beautiful and they can be delivered in time.

For Christmas, maybe there is a possibility of having the name of the song, "I Got You, Babe," engraved on something special. Or just engraved onto a small metal plaque and then glue that onto something else....like a small keepsake or trinket box. Or have it engraved onto a locket and put pics inside. Or have an ID-type bracelet engraved.

You are a GREAT mother who cares VERY MUCH. DQ is very fortunate to have you. Gift or no gift, she has you on her side always and that's all that matters. You have already given her the greatest gift you possibly could offer her, your love. Cheer up SM. The fact that you posted this thread in the first place proves that your not a "loser/don't give a %$#@ parent".

I like the flowers ideas too, but never use a national flower 800 chain. I call a business, hotel or someone I may know that is nearby where the flowers are to be delivered and ask them for a local florist. Then I call the florist directly and cut out the middleman who gets a cut of the $ you will spend.

Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement, guys! It felt fabulous to come home from work yesterday and hear/read y'all don't think I'm a loser/don't give a %$#@ Mom, but the opposite. I'm touched - thank you. And someone special even PM'd me with an unbelievably generous, above and beyond the call of friendship offer. I'm so blessed.

Where there's a will, (and a VISA debit card with some money on it) there IS a way! Personalized jewelry is a good idea except Rachel is metal allergic and jewelry is hard to come by she can wear. I thought of flowers too, and I would use FTD in a heartbeat Monkey cuz I used to work for them on their national call line and wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use that reference to convey expected EXCELLENCE but I thought flowers or a plant wouldn't be much fun or last through semester break coming up. So verrrrrrrrry early this a.m. I got online and was checking out local RAVES in Holland, MI for goodies (thinking study time munchies over the next week) and came up with a Candy/Peanut store - no website or toll free number or anything but supposed to be great goods. Called and got the owner right off - they don't deliver but she had empathy for my issue and is putting together a goodie basket today with some of Rachel's faves - white chockie pretzels, cinnamon almonds and gummies, etc and her hubby is going to hand deliver it. Is that awesome, or what????? I'm impressed and unexpressibly pleased.

Oh, and the note attached says "I got you babe. Love, Mom"

I search around, and found 2 products that sing "Ive Got you Babe"

One is called "Valentine Apes", which you can rarely find, the other is called "Singing Westies", Their Cute little Westie dogs and those are sometimes listed on E-bay,and I think there are a few out there right now...

Good Luck!!!

AWWWWWWWWWW! Thanks, Mibrew. Those sound 'arresting'....will check 'em out.

In my searching I found someplace verrrrrrrrrrry cool - just ordered some Christmas prezzies. I was also looking for anything "Peace" themed, specifically hypo allergenic/nickel free earrings promised at graduation but still not found in these parts. Came upon this shopping site that has a great variety of gifts at reasonable prices and a minimum of 50% of whatever you spend goes to charitable causes...a wide variety of them. I shopped the Hunger Site store, for instance and as a result of my purchases 100 cups of food will go to places like Darfur and Bangladesh. COOL!

from the identifying line at the bottom of my checkout page. Wish there was a domestic violence victim advocacy group among them but do whatever good you can do, whereever you can....
