I got this in an e-mail of Hints From Heloise. With the proliferation of skunks lately out there (I passed 3 dead ones coming home on 41 last weekend), figured I'd share it. "Tis the season"

Dog Gets Skunked

To get rid of that hideous smell, mix one quart of three-percent hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and one teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent (make sure it does not contain bleach or ammonia). Rub this solution into your dog’s coat, avoiding eyes or ears. Bathe with a mild pet shampoo

Thanks for the timely recipe. Just yesterday my granddaughter was saying that one of her dogs really needed skunk treatment. I suggested tomato juice followed by a shampoo.

We had always been told the tomato juice too, so this mixture was interesting. Will be saving it............just in case my son's dog runs in to one when he's at my parents place. Otherwise, if she gets skunked, he'll make the poor thing walk/run 300 yards behind the pickup all the way home to Fresno.

I will have to try the recipe above, and see how well it works- Thanks

Another thing that worked great for me, was a product that you could get at the feed store in Oakhurst, called "Odor Mute". It comes in powder form and you mix it with water, then soak the dog with it.
It worked great!
