National Hat Day
When : Always January 15th
National Hat Day is set aside to wear and enjoy a hat of your choice and style. Isn't it great that hats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles? There's one to fit every size head and personality. Often, hats are used to make a statement, or to promote a cause or a product.
Oh yeah... hats have logical uses, too. Some hats (Aka helmets), offer safety protection. Some hats keep your head warm....how boring.
National Hat Day is not intended to just keep you warm. Its a chance to make a statement and to display you favorite headgear. We suggest you wear a number of different hats over the course of the day.
Did you know? More body heat is lost from your head than other parts of the body. So, wearing a hat goes a long way towards staying warm on a cold winter's day (or night).
Origin of National Hat Day:
Its no doubt that National Hat Day was created by a hat loving individual or group.
There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a "National" day, which requires an act of congress.

National Nothing Day
When : Always January 16th
National Nothing Day is quite simply... a day for nothing.
Seeing as the creators of this day left nothing about the cause or reason for the day, we are also describing nothing about today. To say anything more would defeat the purpose of this day.
Celebrate this day by doing....nothing. Of course, that assumes that doing nothing is okay with your boss.
Origin of National Nothing Day:
We're going to go out on a limb, and guess that the creator of this day wanted to have just one day to do absolutely nothing. He or she succeeded, as we found nothing about this day.
There is no evidence to suggest that Nothing Day is truly a "national" day, which requires an act of congress.

Winnie the Pooh Day
When : Always January 18th
Winnie the Pooh Day is an opportunity to enjoy your favorite bear and all of his friends. This day was created to celebrate the birth of A.A .Milne in 1882. He was an author of children's story books, and created Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Winnie's pals include Christopher Robin, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, and Roo.
Have some fun today. Celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day by reading some storybooks about the adventures of Winnie and his friends. Don't read them alone. Read them with young children.

National Popcorn Day
When : January 19th
The origins of this holiday are unknown. We have not found any information or documentation to confirm this is a true "National" day. But, don't let that pop (burst) your bubble, err pop your corn that is. It's a day to celebrate healthy (until you load it with salt and butter), and addicting popcorn.
Strangely, National Popcorn Day is in January, yet National Popcorn Month is October. According to tradition, it is celebrated on January 19th each year. There is some suggestion that Popcorn Day may, at one point, have been tied to the Superbowl. And, we found one reference to it being on January 30th.
On National Popcorn Day, we suggest you pop up some fresh popcorn, kick back and enjoy!
Also note that "Caramel Popcorn Day" is April 7th.

Penguin Awareness Day: Always January 20
World Penguin Day: Always April 25th
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About Penguin Awareness Day, and World Penguin Day:
Penguin Awareness Day, and World Penguin Day are great opportunities to learn about and appreciate one of the few natives of Antarctica. On these days, spend a little time learning about them.... a pictorial book or internet site is fun. You can also watch a documentary of these cute and popular, grounded birds.
These days are also a time to wear black and white---penguin colors. However, wearing a tuxedo in their honor is optional. It is also popular today to tell a penguin joke or two.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of Penguin Days:
World Penguin Day coincides with the annual northward migration of penguins. This happens each year on or around April 25th. Penguins do not fly. Rather, they walk, or waddle their way to and from.
Our research did not uncover any information about the origin of Penguin Awareness Day. And, we found no consensus on the date. Rather, we found several conflicting dates in January. If anyone can provide information about this day, please contact us.
Did you know? Penguins are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos.

National Buttercrunch Day
When : Always January 20th
Buttercrunch lovers, today is your day. It's National Buttercrunch Day. Today you can enjoy buttercrunch ice cream, candy, or anything buttercrunch.
Spend the day with one of your favorite snacks. Make it your personal goal to have something with buttercrunch at each meal, and as a snack. Tomorrow, you can return to the diet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of National Buttercrunch Day:
Without a doubt, this day was created by an individual or group that just loves Buttercrunch. Perhaps, they were so busy enjoying their favorite treat, that they failed to document their creation and get the crunchy credit!
There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a "National" day, which requires an act of congress.

About National Hugging Day
When: Always January 21st
What a great day! This is an opportunity to give and to receive. Give a hug, and you automatically receive one in return. Sure, someone might not hug back. But, how often does that happen!?!
Hugs are loving. Hugs are therapeutic. Hugs are caring. Hugs are celebratory. Hugs make you feel good inside. Have you ever received a hug from someone who didn't care? I didn't think so. That's proof positive that you're loved and cared about.
Celebrate today by giving hugs to family, friends and loved ones. You'll love the warm feeling you get.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of National Hugging Day:
National Hugging Day was created in 1986 by Rev. Kevin Zaborney from Caro, Michigan. Strangely, this day is copyrighted. One would think that hugs should be given freely and without recourse. Regardless, we are thankful to the Reverend Zaborney for creating this day and would love to thank him with a big hug.
We found no reference to this day as a "National" day, which requires an act of congress.

National Blonde Brownie Day
When : Always January 22nd
National Blonde Brownie Day is a special day that is set aside to bake and eat blonde brownies.
What's a blonde brownie, you ask? Well, as their name implies, traditional brownies are a dark brown. To make blonde brownies, light brown sugar is used in the recipe in place of dark brown chocolate.
On National Blonde Brownie Day, its your right and responsibility to bake blonde brownies, and to eat them. If you don't have time to bake today, buy some and eat a few extra blonde brownies.
Note: The use of nuts and frostng on your brownies is optional.
Origin of National Blonde Brownie Day:
Our extensive research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. Perhaps it was someone who wanted a different colored brownie. Perhaps it was a food company. We may never know.
If we ever find the originator, we have one question to ask: "Just what was wrong with regular brownies!?!"

Beer Can Appreciation Day
When : Always January 24th
Now here's a day that I can really get into! Actually, I can get into the stuff inside even more.
Okay, laugh if you will. But, believe me when I say that Beer Can Appreciation Day is a big and important day to many people.
A lot of people do not know that there's a huge number of beer can collectors out there. Collectors meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it (and drink the beer, of course), then wash and dry it. For beer can collectors, there is no shortage of types of beer, cans and bottles, and sizes. A beer can collector may have hundreds of cans and bottles.
News You Can Use: There's a market for beer cans. If you come across an old can, do not throw it out. Rather, check out the prices in a collector's catalog, or on Ebay.
Beer Can Appreciation Day provides us with the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the many different kinds of beer cans. Enjoy today by starting, or adding to your beer can collection. As you empty the new cans, drink the contents. Afterall, you don't want to be wasteful do you?
Important Note: Please drink responsibly. And, if you drink.......don't drive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of Beer Can Appreciation Day:
We have yet to discover the creator or the origin of Beer Can Appreciation Day. Perhaps the originator opened up a few too many beer cans on the day of creation, and ...uh.... didn't remember the next day.

Opposite Day
When : Always January 24th
Opposite Day is a topsy, turvy day when everything you say, do, see, and hear are the opposite. If you say go left, you mean go right. If you say look up, it means look down. If you see your left foot...is it really your right?
Yesiree, Bob. Opposite Day can be a whole lot of fun. It can also be very, very confusing. This special day is celebrated primarily among school children. Sponge Bob Square Pants even got into the act, with an episode containing the whimsical nature of this day.
Thought for the Day: Opposites attract.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of Opposite Day:
We have yet to discover who created this day, or the original date of creation. In true "Opposite Day" spirit, you have to look for someone who says "I didn't create this day", and go from there.
References to Opposite Day date back to around 2000. However, we found some casual reference to President Calvin Coolidge in the 1920's. Is it possible that a president said one thing and meant another?

Spouses Day and Military Spouses Day
When :
Spouses Day is always on January 26th
Military Spouses Day is held on the Friday before Mother's Day
Spouse's Day is a time to enjoy and appreciate your better half. You can use this day as a prelude or warm up to Valentine's Day, perhaps. But, its not as much of a gift giving event. Rather, use it as a time to show your spouse that you care and appreciate all of the things that he/she does for you and for the household. Over the long years of a relationship, its easy to take for granted the many things your spouse does. He/she's always there. They do so many big and little things as a routine event. So, take today to notice and to say thanks. As for the "enjoyment" part of the day...we will leave that up to you to enjoy your spouse however the two of your desire....
Military Spouses Day is a day to recognize and honor the real backbone of the military..... the spouses of our soldiers. This day recognizes the contributions made by military spouses to the spirit and well being of soldiers and military communities. Where would military moral be without their spouses behind them?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin of Spouse's Day:
We have yet to discover who created Spouses Day in January, or the date of creation.
Military Spouses Day was created by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger established the Friday before Mother’s Day as Military Spouses Day.

National Freedom Day
When : Always February 1st
National Freedom Day celebrates freedom from slavery, and recognizes that America is a symbol of freedom.
National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to remind us that America stands for, and is a symbol of freedom for all people. The roots of this special day come directly from the end of slavery and the signing of the 13th amendment outlawing slavery.
Celebrate this day by reflecting upon your own freedoms that you enjoy by being fortunate enough to be in America. Millions of people in the world are not free.
Origin of National Freedom Day:
Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created National Freedom Day. He believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. So, February 1st was chosen to celebrate National Freedom Day.
On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a the bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day.

What a wonderful day to also celebrate Todd's Cookhouse BBQ's first anniversary! This day Feb. 1, 2006 marks our one year anniversary...a day that symbolizes "freedom". For us personally, freedom to make a living doing what we enjoy and realizing the "American Dream" (at least it's *our* dream!). Thank you to everybody...yes, all you loyal patrons, for helping us get where we are today! One year...and hopefully, many more to come. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Lame Duck Day
When : Always February 6th
Hey, today is everything it's quacked up to be. Lame Duck Day is set aside to give recognition to people whose tenure in a position is running out.
Okay, so you are probably thinking that a "lame duck" is a duck with some sort of injury. If only that were the reason for toady! Rather, a "Lame Duck" by human, definition is a person who is in a position of some kind, and will soon be "shown the door". The best example is an incumbent politician who lost in the November elections. They usually remain in office until the beginning of January. It also applies to leaders, managers, etc, who are retiring or whose term of office is up.
During the interim period, a Lame Duck is usually far less effective, and frequently ineffective. After all, loyalties will soon shift. It's impossible to rally the troops to one more cause or project.
On Lame Duck Day...
If you are a Lame Duck: Enjoy those final days. Reflect upon you successes, and the joys and rewards the position provided to you. Kick back a little and have some fun today, and in the remaining days.
If you know a Lame Duck: Supporters should provide recognition and support. Non-supporters can cut the Lame Duck a little slack today. They will soon be gone.
If you are a duck and you are lame, seek medical attention.
