Do you prefer shopping at Vons or Raley's in Oakhurst?

It all depends on what I'm shopping for...

I have to choose Von's.. I have not shopped in Railey's in over 10 years. When i do go in there with someone who shops there I am reminded of why I don't go there and shop....

Although I do most of my shopping at Vons, I love the deli sandwiches at Raley's. :)

It depends on what I'm shopping for. If I need Spaghetti Squash, it's Raley's because it's half the price. If it's bread for my husband, it's Von's because he will only eat their gushy white bread. It also depends on who has what on sale.

when i do not want to touch everyone i pass, i shop at raley's.
funny enough, that is also the same time i do not mind spending 40% more on my weekly grocery shopping!

lol

i kill me.

raley's is great, but who can afford it for a family of four?

And then there's the times I'm just lazy & it's easier to park once for the bank and groceries.

I prefer Raley's. For some reason I've never been comfortable in Von's.

We shop at Vons--though it seems the employees are getting more and more apathetic. It is usually slightly cheaper and the parking lot is easier to deal with. We just moved to YLP so we will shop more at Costco, etc. When I worked up at Calvin Crest (a local camp at 5,000 feet) and there was no Vons, coming down and walking around Raleys was like visiting the big city. Raleys will always have fond memories because of those times.

Just got home from town, which included a trip to Vons. While there I tried out their new sandwich ordering system. Didn't like it at first, but it was easy enough to use. The best part was I punched in exactly what I wanted, then went shopping, when I was finished, I rolled back around to the deli and they handed me my sandwich, no waiting. Nice, and the sandwich is pretty good, too..

I shop at Raley's almost always. There are many reasons, and though I do make a bit of sacrifice as far as the price differences between the two stores, it is worth it for me.

Reasons:

-They get all of it out of the cart for you
-Raley's carries non-antibiotic/hormoned/meat fed meat (including in steak, hamburger, hotdogs, etc)
-I know most of the faces at Raley's
-I get my pharmacy needs at Raley's and know all the pharmacists by name
-The milk they carry is non-rBGH (say no to Monsanto!) though I have heard that Von's now carries the same for more than Raley's
-The organic foods are great at Raley's, but better yet, the fruit that is NOT organic has a low,low pesticide count, much lower than at Von's
-They don't know all my information about everything I purchase so I can receive a "discount" I get the discounts with out selling my soul

Plus other stuff, like the aisles, augh I hate Von's aisles, waaaay too skinny. And Von's is so large, I can't find anything. Plus every single person at Von's has been trained to say "Hi blah blah blah" and after walking through the large store and hearing that at every corner I am ready for migraine medicine. And lastly, Von's treats their employees like crap.

We like Raley's for the very nice people who work there, more friendly. We feel it is a better run store. Best produce in town and better overall selection. Also agree employee morale is better at Raleys.

We shop at Raleys, We've gone to Vons a few times, because they had good sales, but once we got there, half the stuff we "normally" buy, they didn't sell , so we always ended up leaving and going to Raleys. I also know some people who work at Vons who have been treated terribly.

I like the employees at Raleys too, I can always find what I want.

Seems like I end up doing some shopping at both. I used to favor Vons, because the prices seemed better, but after they did that remodel I spend half or most of my time just standing around trying to maneuver in the aisles. It's bad enough the aisles are far too narrow, but Vons has a practice of cluttering them with cardboard displays, wire shelves and other bins. It is not possible for two carts to pass each other in the vicinity of an "in-the-aisle" display.

It's like I just creep along from one to another and then park behind each one so that other shoppers can go by. And every time I stop in an aisle, to choose an item off the regular shelves, I feel pressured because I am holding up the show. Either that, or I am waiting for somebody else to choose what they need. It's just wait, wait and wait some more.

I hate the new Vons layout. They also removed the middle crossway-aisles, which adds to the inconvenience. After the remodel the prices skyrocketed, even though I like the 10 for $10 sales. Every time I go there it is so frustrating I swear never to return. WinCo is my favorite store, but because it's so far, I don't go very often.

I like both , but with the cost of gas and a 10 cent savings per gallon and a truck that drinks about 100.00 every tank full I use Von's

And...the more you use your Von's card the more cents off a gallon of gas you get. We were getting 20 cents off per gallon while on vacation. We did notice that it seemed as if we started over from square one at the first of the year though with the standard 3 cents off per gallon--but the discount is rising again. We saw a news report in December of a woman that had acheived 77 cents off each gallon! Makes perfect 'cents' to me.

Wow, I've never heard of that. I always just get he standard .10 off per gallon with a $50. purchase no matter how much I spend. If I'm doing a BIG buy, I'll have them break my order down to two orders so that I get two ten cent discounts. It can make the checker pissy, but hey, I work too hard for my money to not take advantage of discounts offered.

I was wondering why I was getting .15 off a gallon in December. Then it switched back to .03 in January. Interesting concept, BG, do they have this posted anywhere?

I'm guessing the Customer Service Desk might have the answer to that. The discounts made such a difference for us while on vacation that we actually searched out Safeway and Von's stores to purchase gas---even when we were paying as little as $2.65 a gal.

I would think they would advertise this more......

The gas discount gets me into Von's for my bigger dollar purchase, but I usually end up stopping at Raley's as well to pick up extra items. It's not an inconvenience to visit both stores since they are so close to each other. I do like their greater variety and atmosphere, but I'm cheap, so I'll save where I can when I can!

As far as the tight squeeze in the aisles at Von's, it's true. I actually try and have fun with it. I'm all cheery and extra polite when I squeeze past other people just to see what kinds of responses I get. It's a chance to try and bring a smile and a courtesy to another human being.

OK, maybe I just need to get out a little more! rolleyes:

I think it's funny at the amount of complaints about the size of the aisles, after all, we are a rural community and we really shouldn't expect to have those aisles like they have in the city...

Seriously, one thing that makes me crazy at Vons in regard to aisle size is that dang pole that sits at the beginning of the paper goods aisle..., I've ran into that thing more times than I can count. :duh: (usually because thats where they put the seasonal stuff and it gets my attention)
