Madera County offers prescription drug cards

Madera County residents will be able to save an average of 20 percent off the retail costs of their prescription medication through a program approved Tuesday by the Madera County Board of Supervisors.
The program - which is available without enrollment fees, forms to fill out or age and income requirements - is offered through Caremark to uninsured and underinsured residents.
"I think we have always had a large underserved population (in the county)," said Carol Barney, Public Health director.
Prescription cards are expected to be available within eight to 10 weeks. After that, obtaining a card is as easy as asking, Barney said.
Card users are able to use the cards at any pharmacy nationwide that is enrolled with Caremark regardless of the county they are from. In Madera County there are 12 pharmacies in Madera, four in Oakhurst, two in Chowchilla and one in Friant that accept the cards. There are 59,000 pharmacies nationwide that honor the cards.
Besides getting the discount on prescriptions, medications that have been marked lower by the pharmacy will be sold at an even lower price to cardholders.
The program is being offered to National Association of Counties member counties. The county pays nothing to participate and receives no funding through participation. Caremark is a national company that specializes in securing discounts for pharmacy products.
