When I worked at the Sierra Star full time, I used to buy dozens of tamales from at least two families that used to come around with ice chests full of hot, foil-wrapped varieties, such as green chile/cheese and the usual pork, beef or chicken. They were the best I have ever had.
I know I can order them from a couple of restaurants in Oakhurst, and they are good, and I know that Costco sells different kinds (I don't like those) and I have also purchased tamales from a local woman who is well-known for them. I even bought some from one of the big-chain local grocery stores, advertising them for Cinco de Mayo, but those were the WORST tamales I have ever had! I took a few bites and threw them out. They were advertised, even on the radio, as home-style and sounded like they'd be the best in the world. *choke*
Anyway, does anybody remember or know of a person named Tommie (or Tommy) and I can't remember their last name, who used to go around with their family to the local businesses and sell homemade tamales? Those were the absolute best ever, but I am not sure they still sell them. I've made them before, but I don't have time now.
And if you don't know of Tommy, do you know of any Mexican families who make and sell REALLY GOOD tamales? It's starting to become an obsession, because I just can't find any that I really like. I miss the "ice-chest people" even though they only came around during Christmas time.
