Check any houseplants. They could be the source of the gnats. I had some little ones a few years ago, my one plant was a breeding ground. I threw it out & they were gone.

I have seen these litler buggers at my Moms and at several of my friends houses...as well as my own. I do think Dodger was onto something tho---moisture and a humid environment. I had always associated them with the drains. (also a great breeding ground)

My long hair slows up and clogs up my drains faster than most and I have to clean them out more often. The gnats are usually an early indication that I need to do. The gnats are gone once I have gone thru the cleaning process. Any drain cleaner seems to work.

I had this problem a few months ago. It stemmed from fruit in the fruit bowl and the drain in the kitchen sink. Now I put vinegar and baking soda down the drain once a month. Nats have not come back.

Once-a-month drain cleaner

Once a month, pour a handful of baking soda into the drain and add 1/2 cup of white vinegar. A small volcano will erupt. Cover the drain for several minutes and then flush with cold water after 30 minutes.

Had gnats once - traced them to one of my large Ficus Tree planters... I sprayed the soil with bug killer and they disappeared - they liked the wet soil - and were living there.
