Hi, I am new to the site!

I was just curious as to what people do for fun while camping; what kind of activities you do throughout the day? I go backpacking a lot, mostly in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, as I am from Ohio. However, I am taking a younger relative and it is his first time going backpacking or camping really, and I was looking for some daytime activities to keep him occupied throughout the day if he should get bored with just walking and exploring...

Thank you!

Activities will depend on how young your relative is. Would a scavenger hunt type of thing work? How about photography or fishing?

Fire, theres always fire. KIDDING !!!

jeez

OK, take him on a hike up Fresno Dome. Its a fairly easy hike, and the view is fantastic. There is also the Shuteye Peak hike. A little more challenging. In camp, teach him how to cook over open flame. Laugh with him when he drops his first piece of chicken into the flame...its an offering to the earth and fire. If hes old enough, (and young enough..) a rock and a stick and a piece of rope make a spear or a war hammer or a whatever he makes. If you get to camp near a stream, and you will, there is swimming holes and waterfalls. PM me, I'll help you with locations.

I taught my Nephew how to cook Dutch Oven style and we'd also make Ice Cream while camping...that was always a bit hit. Once we started the meal then we would take tarps and build shelters and hideouts. It doesn't take much to amuse kids and I know for me it's fun to go back to being a kid!

I know about Dutch ovens also, but I use a sleeping bag or blanket for mine!

Since I was old enough to carry a fishing rod, I wouldn't want to go camping anywhere unless I could go fishing. But there is also gold panning (if it's legal) and metal detecting. Or taking along binoculars and a bird book, or a wildflower book to identify the flowers that bloom in meadows and along riparian areas. Maybe all those things could sound boring to young people today...dunno.

Thank you for all the posts!

My cousin is an early teen ager, but very citified but curious to what is in the woods! Fishing sounds like a good thing to do, the trip planed is to my private property of 100+ acres of woods... There is a pond just outside the woods which would be a good place to catch fish, then teaching him to cook like a country boy should be interesting! Thank you very much, I will probably use all of these in some way, I found a book that will be perfect for the situation!

And dont forget about the sing-a-longs, around the camp fire at night with marshmallows to roast and hot dogs on a stick~ ...and plenty of bug repellant!!! lol
I'm very much like CatdaBrat~ A fishing pole and a bit of water? and I am in heaven! ~ but not all kids have the patience for fishing

If you are planning on lighting a fire on your property you better make sure you get a fire permit first.
