I have a rattle snake under my porch!! I have heard it 2 times in the past month. 2 weeks ago my dog was walking around on the porch, and the thing started rattleing at him. Now today, my cat was walking around near the steps and the dumb thing started rattleing at my cat!! I am afraid it will come on to the porch and get my dog, or get my cat while he is under the porch or just laying on the steps. I am now afraid to go on to the porch or use the steps to go outside!! What can I do??? I have lived in this house for going on 5 years and this is the first time I EVER heard a rattle snake. I am a female who lives alone and I am afraid. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will be off for the next 3 days, but will be back on Friday night. Thanks all!

Whenever I see one at my house, I get out the hose and shoot water at it which makes them move away. Maybe set up a hose with a sprinkler attachment on it to train the snake that his new home isn't such a nice place afterall.

We have had rattlesnakes under our porch here in North Fork, too. One time, they were born there, so we had lots of little ones slithering about. I usually leave rattlers alone UNLESS they move into my yard near the house. I was going to mention the hose, too, which works to get them out. But to make sure they STAY out, the .410 shotgun is an effective eviction notice. There is one, however, I have seen down the hill, that actually lives in the crack of an oak tree and it hunts in the branches. I have left it alone ... for now!
When my kids were small and I did babysitting for other kids, I just couldn't risk rattlers as house guests. I was also worried about the pets, as we've had dogs bitten in the yard.
I love wildlife, but I love LIFE a lot more. I don't feel guilty.
Here is something interesting I found while browsing California Dept. of Fish and Game's Web site: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PDF/PESTNOTES/

How effective is a chemical fire extinguisher. I have been led to believe that a fire extinguisher is the ultimate rattler fighter. True?

If you get in a fight with a rattle snake, then that might be a good idea. Otherwise, you're wasting a lot of money.
What I do is get a bucket with a lid on it. I lay the bucked down on it's side and with a LOOOOONG stick gently coax the snake into the bucket. Then, with the same stick, stand the bucket upright. I carefully get the lid on the bucket and take the snake for a ride in the car to some far away place. No, not your place, but somewhere down 41 towards Fresno. Lots of open space and lots for the snake to eat and do it's thing without harming any humans - or being harmed by humans.
I wouldn't recommend anyone doing that though.

No, no, no, no. Too scared to get close to it. LOL!! Someone just told me about a snake trap. It is a small box with some kind of sticky stuff inside. The snake goes in and gets stuck. Has anyone ever used one of these before?? I would like to try one. The only problem is I am too afraid to stick my hand under the porch to put it there. Is there a place up here that sells them??

But how do you get the snake OUT of the trap? I guess once it's stuck, you are supposed to kill it?

I like the hose idea - get the snake to leave on its own and you can spray from a distance so you can't get bit.

I would never use such an inhumane trap on anything. There is absolutely no reason to kill a snake, any snake, just because it is a snake.
In order for the snake to stay where it is staying, there must be a source of food nearby. Remove all outdoor pet food and make sure any bird feeders are not spilling seed on the ground. The snake is doing you a favor by eating the rodents that are around your home. If it's food source is gone, the snake will go elsewhere.

It says you pour vegitable oil on it and the oil will release the snake. You are suppoe to pick up the box, (UGH), then take it to another location and pour the oil and let it go. But, I will have to have someone else do that. I don't really want to get close enough to pour oil on it.
