There was so many ways around that ban,it only made it so that the only ones with out them was the law abiding citizens. The gang bangers and such never turned in their guns, so it was more of a feel good law anyway.

This arguement is off the track. This response by lawmakers that we won't renew the law because it had no teeth is the most stupid thing I have heard in a long time. The arguement should have been whether to renew the ban or whether to rewrite it and take out the loopholes that makes the law less effective. To let the ban elapse was a signal what the Republicans really believe about our safety. This lack of effort by Bush shows a pattern of disregard for our safety that should give people all the more reason to vote him out of office. An assult weapon has but one purpose to kill people. Lets put this into some perspective shall we.
U.S deaths caused by terroist acts in last 10 years under 4,000.
U.S. gun deaths in the last 10 years roughly 300,000.
This Repulican Government is willing to send 1,000+ soldiers to die in a trumped up war. They won't lift a finger to make us safer where it really counts. They are willing to spend billion fighting in Iraq while cutting school milk funding. These people have the nerve to claim they have high family values. I don't know how they can stand to look at themselves in the mirror.

Kerry and the Dems could have gotting this thing going if they wanted to, or as you say "if they cared about our safety". So to blame one party or person is absurd!

The only thing that's going to help protect our society, is to stop ham-stringing our police forces, stop punishing the law abiding citizen, quit dwelling on the rights of the criminal, and do what it takes to bring down the bad guys.

Doncha just love a country who victimizes the victims, and saddles the heaviest tax burden on the middle class...

The old saying STILL holds true, guns don't kill people, PEOPLE do!

Guns don't kill people ... the bullets do .....

And you may wanna research the tax thing ... although the percentage of taxes paid is higher in the middle class .... the top 20% pays about 80% of the taxes here in the USA ...

Very true and who controls both houses the Repulicans. The Democrats can't get a bill out of committee and voted on only the Republicans can. Bush has the ability to draft a bill and send it for consideration he's done it many times. Bush the resolute is sitting on the fence on this one. He knows if he comes out against the ban it will cost him votes. So instead he says he'll sign it if it gets to his desk. He leaves it to his congressional cronies to spout out this nonsense about the bill not doing anything and doesn't deserve to be renewed. If Bush was a real leader he'd be saying I won't sign this renewal. I've drafted a bill which removes the loopholes and we're sending it to congress. I call on them to pass it quickly. But no, we get the Texas Two Step instead.

No Bill was drafted ... NONE .... not a democrate or a Republican ....

This is because they all get monies from the NRA .... or is it because they knew it was a bad bill and restricted the rights of Americans ....

Kerry Could have drafted a Bill then gone around saying he did ... but he didnt ... he just likes to whine ....

Edwards too ... Hillary ... a lot of people could have .... but decided to not ask for an extension ....

But your right .... It is Bush's fault .... he couldnt make Kerry do more then he usually does ... talk a good game and do nothng

Your wrong Jimi Bills were drafted and introduced.
In the Senate, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and John Warner (R-VA) have introduced S. 2109 which will renew the law for another ten years. S. 2109 is identical to the amendment offered by Senators Feinstein and Warner that passed the Senate by a bipartisan vote of 52-47 on March 2. Although that amendment died when the underlying legislation was defeated, Senators Feinstein and Warner will soon try again to renew the assault weapons ban. In the House of Representatives, Representatives Mike Castle (R-DE) and Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) have introduced identical legislation, H.R. 3831.

Bush said he believed in renewing the ban.
Bills were introduced.
Republican leadership blocked bills from coming to the floor for votes.
Bush could have called on Republican leaders to bring the bills forward for a vote. He Didn't.

An open letter to Bush from Sarah Brady

Dear President Bush:

I cannot begin to express my disappointment in your decision to let the Assault Weapons Ban expire yesterday.

Four years ago you said you supported renewal of the assault weapons ban, though you made it clear that you were generally opposed to reasonable gun violence prevention laws. I was very happy to hear you say it then, because it was a sensible position, and one long supported by such conservative leaders as Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater. As a lifelong Republican, it gave me hope that my party would move away from a knee-jerk tendency to oppose whatever the gun lobby said Republicans should oppose.

Now, these guns, designed by military scientists to inflict the maximum level of damage to human beings, are back on our streets.

You have broken your promise to the American people and you should be ashamed. Jim and I loved Ronald Reagan, and one of the main reasons we loved him was that he was always, always, true to his word.

This law worked, and it saved lives. It saved the lives of police officers and children. You cast your support aside for a political endorsement. We all pay prices in life for our actions. I hope the American people will make you pay a price for this decision.

In your current campaign, you are pledging to keep America safe. But your conscious decision to let this ban expire has placed us all in jeopardy.

The expiration of this law is temporary. It will be renewed: It is only a matter of how long it will take to renew it. There is still time for you to show leadership, do the right thing, and restore this law. But know that Jim and I will continue our efforts to restore the ban, with or without your help. And we will succeed. Lives are hanging in the balance.

Mr. President, step forward and do the right thing.

Sincerely,
Sarah Brady

On a side note California became the first state to ban the sale of armor-piercing .50 caliber sniper rifles as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 50

Ok percentage wise, but I was talking Burden which is a lot different than percentage.

When the day is done, and the middle class person goes home, they have paid for sales tax, income tax, gas tax, property tax, city tax, county tax, state tax, etc etc etc...

It all adds up to more than 50% of a paycheck going to tax. It's no wonder middle class is an endangered species.

It just amazes me that for only a 6 month period in my whole life I was earning enough money for the year to NOT be considered Low Income... http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif
