Wow, first I see Three Sisters is for sale, then I read this today... (doesn't look like it'll happen anytime soon, though...)
Erna's looks into a possible sale
By Joan Obrah, The Fresno Bee
On the Web site of Sotheby's International Realty, a real estate listing describes an Oakhurst property familiar to many locals:
"Château du Sureau, or Estate by the Elderberries, is a manor-style 10-room hotel with a warm country feel with a grand staircase, antique-filled rooms, canopy beds, fireplaces, tapestries, and large soaking tubs. ... The Elderberry House restaurant has hand-stenciled beamed cathedral ceilings and fireplace and is a destination of choice for discriminating patrons. Spa du Sureau is an art-deco inspired escape offering serene, luxurious treatment and extraordinary pampering."
The listing created buzz after folks spotted it online and in the Wall Street Journal. Could it be true? Is Erna Kubin-Clanin really selling Erna's Elderberry House and the rest of her award-winning property?
Sort of.
Kubin-Clanin says she's looking for an investor and a gradual transition into new ownership. "I'm going to be 67 in November," she says. "Eventually, I need to retire."
"Anything eventually is for sale with the right amount of money," adds Kubin-Clanin, who declined to disclose her asking price.
But she says she'll sell only if the right buyer comes along. It's not just a matter of money. She says she's looking for someone who shares her vision of traditional European elegance and hospitality. And given Kubin- Clanin's exacting standards, finding that buyer likely will take a long time.
"This [sale] is something that may not ever happen," says Rene Clanin, Erna's husband. Working with Sotheby's is "our way of exploring the possibilities."
Kubin-Clanin points out that there are no potential buyers yet. "In this economic climate," she says, "we don't expect anyone to come forth for quite a while."
