From time to time, events happen in the Oakhurst area that get everyone talking and speculating!!
Example:
Coldwolf
May 05, 2005, 11:57 PM
Like, whose head is that between the truck and trailer? and which time that the Bear went missing was that?
BGW

I think the more important question is who is the guy in the background wearing the red/pink shirt? He is just standing there watching as the Talking Bear is wisked away to parts unknown.

Isn't the bear being relocated to the front door of the Oak room , to guard from unwanted patrons?

No, he's still there. This is an older photo...pre-digital even http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/doh.gif
Over the years...the Talking Bear has 'gone' missing. Usually there are outrageous stories about his where abouts racing through town. I like to think the Bear needs a vaction every now and then; just like everyone else.
Perhaps some of you know some of "The Bear" stories and would like to share them.

Does anyone know the story why he isn't getting his voicebox back? I know it has been several years since he was "violated" but I remember coming up here and being able to him tell his story. My kids would like to hear him http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif What originally happened to him?? Anyone know?? http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/confused2.gif

No Wonder he can't talk anymore!! Someone stole his tongue!! I am wondering which cat got it?
Really though MntEagle...is there more to the tongue theft or was it just a tongue theft sends bear for repairs kind of story?
MtnEagle
May 06, 2005, 03:55 PM
Repair, IIRC it was a prank by some teenagers who returned it. I believe that referbish also had him talking again, but that's been a few years ago now.
As for why he don't talk anymore? Maybe he got tired of people not listening... http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/crazya.gif

I didn't know he stopped talking. He's still referred to as "The Talking Bear", so I just assumed he was still on speaking terms. Admittedly, I've never spoken with him in all these years that I've known him to exist at the corner of 41 and 426....I guess I was never curious as to what he had to say. But now I'm really curious!
What did he say when he was talking? Anybody remember?

I asked my Mom about the Bear's history yesterday. She grinned at me evilly and said for me to take a close look at the Bear in the Photo and the Bear at Diiton's Centry 21...
She said something to the effect of the old Invasion of the Body Snatchers movie..."who are you and what have you done with my Bear....now I am really curious as to any silly funny stories related to this local Icon.
I can remember living in Tx. and Az. and over hearing people say "why you just turn right at the talking bear.....this creature has quite a legacy; real or imagined!!

Maybe the Talking Bear needs someone to rub old english all over his wood, that might get a rippling rise out of him.. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/blush.gif

I can't believe Oakhurst as a whole can just sit back and have their world famous, award winning Talking Bear go silent http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/sad420.gif. Shameful. Who's in charge of his maintenance and care...Century 21? Well, we should rally for Talking Bear's voice to return...or boycott Century 21 http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/snobby.gif. That'll really put the pressure on.
He is Oakhurst's town history...and he must be restored. Who'd like to step up to the plate and organize a petition and protest http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/1zhelp.gif? (I'm not good at these kind of things http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wiseguy.gif) Let's get the Talking Bear in the front page news http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/yes.gif...I'm sure there's a lot of mountain folk who don't realize he's not talking anymore and hasn't been for a few years. Very sad. We must do something. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/yes.gif

I know that a long time ago the talking bear quit talking due to vandalism. But I had heard when I moved back there that Brad Ditton had taken on the task of getting him restored and that he does talk now. And at Christmas time, I heard that he tells a Christmas story or something like that. I've only been gone a year. I can't imagine all that has changed in such a short time. Someone needs to go rub his tummy and see what he says! http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif

The voice has been down for a couple of months and Brad shut it down because the darn thing would talk all day and night without pushing the buttons, he does have the voice box and trying to get it repaired, but is not in a hurry to do it..... but I did not tell you that.

Just for the record....the Bear belongs to Brad actually.....he is the one who put it there and has maintained it all these years....among other vandalism...it's tongue gets stolen on a regular basis...the tapes wear out or it talks incessently due to malfunction....I used to work at Ditton Realty and was always having to try and "fix" the bear for tourists etc. Althought the town claims it as it's own....it is actually a real pain to keep working, so I think Brad should be commended for keeping it going as long as he has.

I have been visiting this area with my family since I was a baby. We would stay at the Oakhurst Lodge and would walk to the talking bear every time we visitied.
When I first moved up here, many people didn't know what road 426 was... but they sure knew what the "Talking Bear Road" was. There was no stop light... just a 3 way stop sign with flashing red lights.
Oakhurst just wouldn't be the same without the bear...

I was with my father when we heade to Fish Camp to go hunting. We drove 49 to 41 and headed North thru town. Town? About 3 or 4 buildings. This in 1950. When I drove up here in 1980 to interview for a job I was truly anazed to see all the buildings and it was actually a town. Compared to now though it wasn't much of a town.

Manitoba Footage Update - May 6, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recent footage described in the Canadian press was obtained on April 16, 2005, near the Nelson River, 500 kilometers north of Winnipeg, Canada.
Click image above for the map showing the location of the recent footage in Manitoba, Canada.
BFRO Director Matt Moneymaker has seen a digital copy of the master tape (the master tape is 8mm analog video), in Los Angeles, at the studio for the Fox Television program "Current Affair." Here are his observations:
"The Manitoba footage is blurry for the most part. The figure is nearly 1000 feet from the camera, on the opposite bank of a wide river.
Due to the distance involved, and problems with auto-focus while in zoom, the footage ranks well below the Memorial Day footage in terms of clarity."
Exclusions:
The figure in the footage is definitely :
1) Not an illusion created by a play of light and show (i.e. not a "blobsquatch").
2) Not a bear, or any other large, known, native species.
3) Not a composite, fabricated image.
4) A dark, upright, primate figure, with arms and legs somewhat like a human, standing on a riverbank.
5) Either a human or a sasquatch, but among those two candidates it is not clearly one or the other, due to the blurriness of the footage.
Comparisons:
Side-by-side images, showing humans standing at the same place, shot from the same vantage point, might demonstrate that the Manitoba figure is substantially larger than an average human, but comparison images are not yet available.
The trees along the river bank will provide scale measurements and a height range of the figure. When the height is determined it may reduce or eliminate the potential for it being a human.
The limb lengths are not clear enough in the footage to show an obvious distinction with human limb proportions, as they do in the Patterson footage.
The Focus Problem:
The footage is clearest at the beginning, for a few seconds, before it zooms in. The further the camera zooms in, the blurrier the figure becomes. Finally it goes into the dreaded "digital zoom" mode. Digital zoom transforms the blurry figure into a blocky, blurry figure.
The focus problem is apparently caused by the camera's auto-focus mechanism being thrown off by branches in the foreground. There is also some fog behind the figure. The fog dulls the edges of background objects when the camera is on full zoom. Had there been no fog behind the figure, the auto-focus mechanism might have found more clear edges in the tree line to use while adjusting itself.
The combined segments are well over 30 seconds total. There are two segments.
Circumstances:
The man who obtained the footage, Bobby Clark, is the ferry boat operator at the river crossing north of the Cree Nation community at Norway House.
Clark had previously worked the night shift. During his night shifts he occasionally heard eerie screams in the distance. He wanted to record the unusual screams so he made it a habit of bringing his camcorder with him to work. He didn't get any sound recordings, but he continued to bring his camcorder with him to work after he changed his shift to the morning shift.
The morning shift for the ferry operator begins at 6:30 am. Often there is no traffic to ferry across the river at that hour. Clark shot the footage from the opposite bank of the river while standing on the river bank waiting for vehicles to arrive.
For those of us who have been studying authentic footage and debunking bogus footage for a long time, the full circumstances of this incident point to a credible encounter.
The footage will air on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 as one of the stories on the Fox Television program "A Current Affair." The program may be aired on your local Fox station, or on a local independent station, so check your local listings.
Next Steps:
Comparison images will allow for measurements. Measurement data will allow for a height range to be determined. The height range will allow for calculation of a percentage of probability as to whether the figure could be human. The larger the measurements, the smaller the probability that it is human. If the figure is well over eight feet tall, the probability is close to zero (0). The location where the figure was walking (a muddy, marshy riverbank) and the movement seen in the footage, reasonably eliminates the possibility of a man on stilts.

The best news out of this is that even though it's the start of summer we'll have a price war between our two local favorites, and that can, only benifit us.. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

Because cigarettes are bad? But man the 22 Mile House is completley DISGUSTING!!! Have you ever had the "pleasure" of using their restroom? After I walked in, I walked right back out, sick... never will I go in there again, and I wouldn't actually buy something to consume there.

When I first moved up here the 22 mile house was a bar. I stopped once, ordered a draft beer and it came with a large olive in it.

That was because it was a biker bar. A draft beer is a mixed drink.

From interview with Leroy Brown, 1986
22-MILE HOUSE
In 1939, when Highway 41 was completed, a man named Claude Miller and his wife established a service station and bar there. In 1946, Ida and I bought the bar so we could consolidate all our holdings on the west side of 41 Highway. After about a year of running the bar and service station we didn't think we could handle it. We sold the business and about an acre and a half; now the saloon is called the "22-Mile House." Previously, we called it the "Sweetwater Station." When he first established it, Mr. Miller called it "Miller's" and that is the history, to date, of "22-Mile House." It is twenty-two miles from the Fresno Courthouse.

As of... oh probably about a year ago, the 22 mile house still sold cigarettes. But i seem to recall they'd only stock Marlboros and one of the generic brands. For at least 2 years they never had Camels...

The shaved ice stand is gone forever... the county shut it down because of water issues? I think so anyway... glad I am not preggers anymore, I loved shaved ice when I was. Me wonders if this is some sort of sneaky move by Starbucks, though I can't see why they would bother, it is not like she got tons of business at the stand. But seems sort of fishy that Madera Health Dept (is that an oxymoron?) would come a knockin' just days after Starbucks opened. Ho hum.

OK, from what I heard they were using the water from Hondo's from a hose. I think that might explain the health issues. I know, I know, we all used to drink from a hose when we were little, but it doesn't fly with Health Depts. Personally I wouldn't drink ANY water in Oakhurst. They just came out with another warning today - we received it at work via fax. Don't drink the water - and no, we are not in Mexico - yet! http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/goofy.gif

Yosemite Joy,
Yes the shaved ice building is gone, there is a big void where it used to be http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/sick.gif.
Hondo's water comes from their own well and not the hillside brown water company http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wiseguy.gif.
The shaved ice business didn't comply with health and sanitation laws so they are gone http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/comp26.gif.

Some of their stuff is ok.. but all in all.. even a silly Scot-Norweigan Redhead like me can cook better Italian food (and i do)..... Id rather see an Olive Garden there.... or Macaroni grill... but anything is better than Mexico Tacquiera.

MSG in their salad dressings?
We had the Sweet Tomatoes sister restaurant in Orange County, Soup Plantation...I loved that restaurant. The kids love it too...the whole serve yourself, pick what you want thing was a big draw for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was MSG in their food. I usually just assume that no restaurant is safe unless they very explicitly deny using the stuff. Even then I have doubts. But we still go to when we are down in Fresno for the day http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif I'm going to email Sweet Tomatoes and see what they say....

MSG is in everything. Im not just being paranoid on this one. Pretty much all forms of flavoring are MSG. Now look around you. How many things have added flavoring?

Funny, J gets sick from MSG & since I stopped using products with it as an ingredient, whenever I eat it I get a stomach ache & my RA hurts more.
J can tell from the smell of one's cooking if MSG has been added, he's that sensitive to it.
