What is it with me and TVs? The living room 42" LCD went POP and then turned off. Stinks like burned plastic. Won't turn on now. Pretty sure it is a goner.
Should we chuck it and get a new one or get someone to fix it? It is only a couple years old. How much do local (Sierra Audio/Video? other places?) cost to look into fixing these type of tvs?

Sierra Audio/Video is out of business... best chances are to take it to Fresno to at least get an estimate.

We have a Samsung. It is about 5 years old. The week after it went out of its one year warrenty it broke. We called Samsung and asked them who we should have work on it. It is a company out of Fresno that just works on TV's does not sell them. They told us that no matter which brand you buy they all have their own individual problems. If you look on the side of our TV their is a part number for the fan. It goes out every so many thousand hours of viewing. It goes out so often they put the part number on the side of the TV. I think that is terrible. But, we order it on the internet it is delivered to the house and we figured out how to install it ourselves. I think when you get right down to it, not one brand is better than another, they all have problems. I am sure that someone will read your thread and point you in the right direction for service. Good luck, our fan will probably bite the dust tomorrow.

My husband has had a TV repair business for over 30 years in Oakhurst. VanAman TV
683-3232. He rarely works on the really big TVs, but when he wakes up, I'll ask him about your problems.

It is 2 1/2 years old, Sylvania (sp?).

He said that you should probably toss it. Sorry! Sylvania parts are very difficult to get. I guess it's their way of making the public buy a new TV. It sucks.

He recommends Sony, Panasonic or Samsung. Sam's Club and Costco usually have good prices, but Sears will match their price if they carry the same model you are looking at and it's always good to keep your $$$ local.

Thanks for the free advice. We moved our Sony 32" (it seems so small!) into the living room, it will do for now. Going to read reviews and check out prices to find a new big screen. Hadn't considered Costco, will look into that!

Just in case the TV has shown its last show. I thought I might mention this flyer I just received in the mail with other items for YLP:
Conveniently recycle your old electronic devices for FREE and help Rivergold students raise money for fieldtrips. Rivergold's Eco-Activism class is teaming up with Mr. Doug Balbas, owner of Yosemite Recycling, to help local residents get rid of our old electronics just in time for the digital change over and Christmas, while raising money for fieldtrips at the same time. So, clean out your houses and garages in the good green way, and support a worthy cause at the same time. Simply drop off your items at Rivergold Elementary School Monday through Friday October 27-November 7 from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm in the upper parking lot. Here are some example of what you can bring.
Please bring items like:
TV's, speakers, toasters, blenders, household appliances, deiling fans, microwave ovens, hand held electronics, old electric cords, stereos, video players, e-waste, old radios, electronic toys, broken calculators, etc.
Large Appliances:
Mr Balbas will arrange fo pick up large appliances like washers and refrigerators directly from your home if you leave your contact information with the Rivergold office. The service will be provided free of charge. Please don't bring huge appliances to the school.
Sorry no telephone contact information was on the flyer and no pickup restrictions were listed.

When I took my camera in, they had alot of big screen tv's. It surprised me. Are these $1400. and up tv's always breaking down? Wonder what the cost is to fix them....

just a heads up..
on televisions, and pretty much ANY other electronics, do not forget about square trade.
http://www.squaretrade.com
they cover used items too.
fwiw, i bought a 57" hd dlp tv in feb 06 from circuit city. they wanted $660 for a 3 year warranty, on a tv i paid 1749 for. (hella good deal with a 150 off coupon). in feb of 2007 (one day before my 1 year anniversary) i bought a square trade warranty for something like 130 bucks. it covers the purchase price total, i left off the tax and covered it for exactly $1749.00.
anyway, in dec of 07 the light engine went out. i contacted square trade, they found that to repair it in house it would exceed the amount of my coverage, and in 5 days i had a check for my full coverage amount...
ill let you all read about it, but it is the best thing going IMHO.
i have two digital cameras, a 32" lcd, a digital cam corger, and two ipods covered with em. i bought 4 items off ebay, and all of em have 3 year warranties...

Did you see that the e-waste is going to be at the entrance of the Oakhurst Community Park tomorrow (Saturday) - can take your stuff for recycle - anything with a cord practically.

Really? I have to go to the park for a dance thing tomorrow. I'll look into this. I have two defunct tvs-- besides the failed one at the beginning of this thread. And a computer monitor from the prehistoric Windows 95 age.

Bring your electronics to Oakhurst Computers any time in October and we'll make sure it gets to Rivergold. Help us help the kids.
