I used to shop at The Grocery Discount Store in Oakhurst several times a month. Then I watched their prices go up and up and up. I always found the staff to be very friendly, helpful and friendly. One day when I was checking out the checker said, you didn't get much today and I said, no, I've stop buying this and this and this because the prices have gone up so much. she looked at me and said "it is greed, just plain greed". So, I have not been in that store for 4 or 5 months. This afternoon I droped my husband off at physical therapy and had an hour to kill. I needed a pound of pasta for dinner tonight and they usually have a couple of different brands of imported pasta for much less than Von's or Raley's. Wow, all new faces. Everyone was talking to each other as if they all knew each other. Seemed like it is family owned and operated rather than employees. You still have to be careful about what you buy some of the prices are just plain out of line but if this business does have new owners they may be working on that. I wish them well.

They have had new owners for several months now since the original - unless it has been recently sold again?

Some of the prices in there are outrageous for being a discount store. I have noticed that they are higher on some things than the local grocery stores. I only go in there for the capri sun drinks my kids like because they are only 10 cents.

I do like the new staff. They even ask if you'd like help out now, especially if you have big items like dog food. I did notice the other day that pull-ups are now $8.00 They were $4.50 a month or so ago.

Be careful buying pasta in boxes there. I used to buy pasta there, but once I bought a lot of pasta and they all were full of weevils. I think that is what they are called. Disgusting! If you do buy pasta there, buy the kind in bags and make sure they are sealed shut.
I don't buy food there anymore. The juices and applesauces and cereals were always expired, I would always spend a lot of time checking for expiration dates on everything. So instead of spending that extra time checking for expired things I spend the extra 10-30c at Raleys and not worry about it.
I have gone in there and bought the expensive shampoo and conditioner that I like. It was less than 5 dollars there, over 10 dollars at Raley's. And the face wash and razors are priced well.

Same here YJ. Its NOT as bad as it was, before the *new owners*? (someone said?) took over, but before it was horrible! Boxed pasta and even rice is the worst. I have taken them both back...not because they cost so much but based on the principal of it. If the one box I bought, was bad? Then chances are the rest of them are the same....YUCK! The prices there now are not that much cheaper anymore to shop there. That once a month stock up trip to Fresno to Winco, is saving us a lot of money, and the products are NOT outdated..... and are less than even GDC now on MOST products. Its just not a bargain for food stuffs, unless its like salt or soaps. Even the batteries have a shelf life and most of those are also expired.

Check out the Hillside in YLP. Hard to beat. They don't have everything the really big stores have, but the prices are less than the biggies for most things, and it's a pleasant place to shop--unlike Vons with their narrow aisles and high shelves. 1/2 Gal Milk generally $2.19 or so, compared to $2.59 and up at the others. Gourmet Breads in the Deli area are hard to beat, meat is excellent. Plenty of close in parking, seldom crowded, what's not to like!

It has been three months since I was last in the grocery outlet store. Yesterday on the way home from mass my mom asked me if I would stop in there. Oh, my gosh, they had bottled salad dressing 3 for $1.00. My mom and I and one other lady shopper were laughing so hard we had tears running down our faces, the dates on the bottles were from 2007. Some of the cake mixes were 2007 also. Except for one refrigerator section they looked very well stocked. The prices were as high or higher than Von's. Anyway the product we were looking for is liquid milk, not powdered, that does not have to be refrigerated. My mom is in her 80's and does not drink much milk, even a quart goes bad some times, but she does use it sometimes and would like to have it in her pantry. I know that they have chocolate milk in juice type boxes that does not need refrigeration because I buy it for my grandchildren. Has anyone ever seen white milk that does not need refrigeration? I guess this is really two different threads, so sorry about that.

dancingqueen, I have heard that Trader Joe's carries Horizon Organic milk in the cartons that do not require refrigeration. I sometimes shop for groceries in bulk on Amazon.com (through the Kennedy's Disease Assn. link: http://www.kennedysdisease.org/help_shopping.html), and I know that they carry it (although it is expensive).

Us too, YJ. The Kirkland brand is great, and a tremendous savings over the Horizon brand at the local markets!
We do shop at the discount grocery for certain items (and save quite alot), but we also really watch the expiration dates. I love to bake, and awhile back we found the Watkins brand double-strength vanilla for $1.25 per bottle (only 2 available, darn it)! Needless to say, I was piggish, and bought them both (delicious vanilla, BTW).

re: The non refrigerated milk. Once you open the package, won't it age at the same rate? I would refrigerate it anyway because I like milk cold unless I am just using it to cook with.
re: The Discount Store. I'm told you need to know what the prices are at the other stores or you may end up paying more for older products. Since I am poor at remembering prices, I just stopped going there.

I looked at Costco the other day and I could only find chocolate unrefrigerated milk in the juice box type containers, it was in a box at the end of the refrigerator section. I do buy that for my grand-kids. YJ is that what you are talking about? If not in what section of the store do they carry it? I will also check out Von's. She has not ever tried it so I would like to just get her a 6 pack to start out with in case she doesn't like it. RM, I wouldn't worry about it going bad because it comes in such small containers. Yes, that is what I was talking about.
They have it at Raley's also, in the unrefrigerated soy/rice milk section (across from the regular dairy, in the "health food" aisles. I believe they are sold 3 a cellophane there.

The milk inside the cartons is the same and still requires no refrigeration. Gabriel Camas, 7, and Martin Camas, 12, said this one tastes like "plain old milk," while William Steel, 8, detected a chemical flavor and thought the consistency was too thin. Henry Tarplin, 17, found it "mild, light, and creamy," while his sister Olivia, 14, found notes of butter. Does not need to be refrigerated before opening.

Thanks so much HM for offering to pick some up for me but I will be going to Oakhurst tomorrow to play bridge and I will stop at Von's and pick some up. Thank you also for posting all the info about the product. Interesting info on the milk. I'll have to check it out.
Regarding discount stores, a few years ago my daughter turned me on to the Winco grocery stores. It is a big box style store but you don't have to buy in bulk. Every time I shop there my bill is always at least 30% less then what I would spend at Von's or Raley's. If I'm going to stock up on canned foods, cereal and such, it's worth the drive down to Fresno. I think the closest one is on Shaw, about a half mile from the 99. Of course I do shop local for the routine stuff, but. if you are looking to stretch you dollar, check it out. You won't believe the prices!

I go to the one on Ashlan and Peach, there is a Costco there too. Great savings. If you don't want to go that far you can try Food Max on Blackstone just before Trader Joe's. They have great prices too. I think we are all looking for ways to stretch or dollar and still get quality products.

I know that the discount grocery store in Oakhurst has new owners and my mom and I shopped in there one day right after they took over ownership. The prices were so high that we decided to give them some time to get in touch with our community needs and our economy. On Sunday she and I were just shopping around town and decided to take another look. What in the world are you thinking, discount grocery store? MANY of your prices are higher than Von's ( I don't shop Railey's any more because of the sign issue, when they change it I will be glad to shop there again). Three and four years ago everyone in line had a cart full of groceries, on Sunday everyone had one or two items or walked out empty handed like we did. Coincidental, my son was over on Tuesday and said "what in the world is happening with the discount grocery store, I went in there for a jar of dried parsley and left and got it at Von's. I just can not imagine that they are going to stay in business for very long, they also have too many off brands and some of their items are very out dated, my mom was looking at crackers that expired in Nov 07, yes, I checked because I thought her 83 year old eyes were not seeing it correctly, Nov 07.

I agree. I hadn't been in there for years and the other day I had some time to kill. So I decided to check the Grocery discount store out, maybe they had changed. But they hadn't. All the items I checked were way out of date and I could buy the items cheaper on sale at Vons or Raley's. They are out of touch with reality!

Wondering if that is against the law to sell something that is almost 2 years expired??? I rarely shop there anymore and I only go in for certain items that I can no longer find at Vons/Raleys...I'm not going to tell you what it is cause you all might want some too

I also agree with this and have quit shopping there. When I started to notice the increased (outrageous) prices of their items, I asked one of the check out clerks what was going on and if she or they were aware of regular grocery store items. I was told " Yes they are aware" "but according to them (owners) it beats going to Fresno" ~ Then under her breath she looked me straight in the eyes and said..."its just plain greed". She herself was not happy with the new owners "new" management tactics.
I like other went in there one more time however, and also found the prices were even higher than before. I'm one that used to leave with a full cart full, but I dont go there anymore at all.

We moved up here five years ago. My husband and I went into Grocery Discount then. In succession, my husband picked up two items that were expired. We left and never went back.
And just in case someone is taking a poll, I love Raley's and couldn't care less about the sign. What's wrong with it?

I have only shopped at Grocery Discount once or twice throughout the years, so I cannot really offer much input regarding their prices or food quality. But -- (slightly off-topic but following the thread) -- I do feel the need to mention that I have inadvertently purchased expired foods at both Raley's and Von's. One-month-expired "fresh" salsa (twice) and a two-month-expired lean turkey cooked sausage at one store. Switched to the other store, and promptly bought funky "fresh" fish and more expired "fresh" salsa. So a word of warning -- check expiration dates of ALL perishables at ANY store you frequent. I am not sure why there is such an increase in expired products on the shelves this past year or two, but it is something to be aware of and to watch for. I had always taken for granted, and blindly trusted, that major chain grocery stores would be very diligent about that kind of thing. Apparently not. Perhaps due to staff cutbacks?

Both Von's and Raley's will cheerfully refund your money. Sorry, Raley's a little more cheerfully than Von's, but anyway I purchased sunflower seeds at Raleys to find out they were stale. They refunded my $$ no problem. It wasn't a special trip either I needed more goodies.
On another note, I really try to buy only Calif. produce to support our farmers. Purchased green onions at Vons that said "grown & shipped" by Boskovich Farms, Inc. in Oxnard, CA., only to get them home & on close inspection noted on the lable "Product of Mexico". So, I'm thinking "Boskovich Farms" has a farm in Mexico to get away with their labeling. Buyer Beware, if you care. ;)

From the Sierra Star:
After receiving letters and phone calls complaining about its decision to keep its existing sign, which is not in compliance with the Oakhurst Area Sign Ordinance, Raley's Supermarket has announced the sign will be replaced.
So, anyone that has a problem with the sign can shop at Raley's again.

I have to disagree with most of the previous postings. I think it is possible to save quite a bit and purchase good quality food at this store, but you must pay attention to dates and be knowledgeable about pricing in major supermarkets. You can get many canned food items well within date for a very low price, such as Hunt's or Del Monte tomatoes for 60 cents. Cereal that would cost $4-$5 per box in Von's can be bought for $2-$2.50.
I have shopped there regularly for several years and have never found weevils or spoilage in anything. During the same period, I have had to return items to both Raley's and Von's. Yes, the prices on some things have risen, and in some cases you can find things cheaper elsewhere, but this is what comparison shopping is about. I don't think that it is necessarily productive to characterize the owners as "greedy" simply because you aren't happy with their pricing. Anyway, just my opinion - I think this store has a lot to offer for careful consumers on a budget.

I have to agree with the higher prices but then.....the market prices are way higher now too. As for expiration dates - I don't mind if they are several months old - but several years are another story. Yesterday I was looking for tomato sauce. Most of the cans said expired 2006/07. I heard there is a website where you can go on and ask about exp. dates and if it is ok to use. Will try to find it for ya.

I heard there is a website where you can go on and ask about exp. dates and if it is ok to use. Will try to find it for ya.
A quote from the link that I posted earlier:
"Canned goods. Highly acidic foods like tomato sauce can keep 18 months or more. Low-acid foods like canned green beans are probably risk-free for up to five years."

Oh my gosh, I've spent an hour + on looking at canned goods exp. dates. There are so many sites and so many different opinions I think I've just decided that if anything is over 1 yr. old forget it! Like Iris said, if it is acidic a lessor shelf life should be expected. I'm going to stick to the 1 yr. limit on everything. Re GDC they have great buys on spices, candy, frozen foods and paper goods. Sometimes, soups, although when the markets/drug stores have sales they are cheaper and fresher. It's like a hit and miss thing.

I agree there are some things that I just know are a good buy and then there are the things I use all the time that the stores just don't carry anymore and so when I can find it there look out cause I take every last one of them ; )
