Who was the best drummer of all time?
My vote: Jon Bonham - Led Zeppelin

Back in the 80's, Jon Bonham was considered the best drummer of all time....and then some people argued Alex Van Halen was up there as one of the best. Wonder if those two are still in the same standing as viewed by those in the music industry and the general listening public, of course

Too hard to narrow it down to just one. Depends a lot on the genre. I guess if I HAD to choose only one for rock and one for jazz, I'd say:
Mike Portnoy - Rock
Alphonse Mouzon - Jazz
Surfus, you're right: Buddy Rich was an incredible drummer, but a bit conservative for my taste (usually all the awards go to musicians who play a little "safer" than others). Here's a more complete sampling...
Rock:
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Neil Peart (Rush)
Bill Bruford (Yes; King Crimson; UK; many other projects)
Alan White (Yes)
Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake, & Palmer)
Alex Van Halen (Van Halen, obviously)
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Jazz-Rock "Fusion":
Alphonse Mouzon (Weather Report; McCoy Tyner; Larry Coryell's Eleventh House; Gil Evans; Herbie Hancock; Stanley Clarke; Al DiMeola; George Benson; Freddie Hubbard; Sonny Rollins...Need I go on?)
Lenny White (Miles Davis; Return to Forever; Woody Shaw; Freddie Hubbard; Joe Henderson; Gil Evans; Stan Getz; on and on...)
Billy Cobham (Horace Silver; Miles Davis; Mahavishnu Orchestra; Spectrum; many others)
Jack DeJohnette (John Coltrane; Miles Davis; Ornette Coleman; Sonny Rollins; Sun Ra; Thelonious Monk; Bill Evans; Stan Getz; Ron Carter; Herbie Hancock; Eddie Harris; etc; etc)
Let's face it: Most of us know a lot more about rock, pop, country and hip hip (ie, "Popular Music") than we do about jazz, but most jazz musicians are WAY more skilled and knowledgeable than rock musicians.

Steve is correct it is hard to narrow it down.
I Said Buddy because my Instructor started me out with the classics and Reading the Music of classics and I had to play along with Sheets from Buddy.
I forgot all about Alan White Boy it has been a long time to see him play.
