Actors Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz have gone their separate ways after a year of dating.

"[They] have decided to take time off as a couple," confirmed a joint statement to People magazine, which cited the usual Hollywood pressures.

"Due to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time."

The couple met during the filming of the action movie 'Sahara', which was released last year.

Cruz, who was previously linked to Tom Cruise after his divorce from Nicole Kidman, is currently filming 'Manolete' in Spain with Adrien Brody. She took time out from the bull-fighting movie last week to collect the Best Actress prize at the Cannes film festival with her co-stars in the Pedro Almodovar film 'Volver'.

The Texan McConaughey is in West Virginia filming the American football film 'We Are... Marshall' alongside 'Lost' star Matthew Fox. He was previously involved with Renee Zellweger and Sandra Bullock.
