My daughter was supposed to go to Sacramento with her school class last year, for what was to be a 16 hour field trip which I thought was INSANE for 8 and 9 year olds, and me!
Instead, I took her for 3 nights, we went up on the train and walked from the train station to our hotel downtown, just a few blocks. We toured the capitol and I got to say "Governator" and "Herr Gropenfurer" which I might have had to whisper if we had gone with the school.
We went to John Sutter's fort and my daughter was able to assess, I believe correctly, that he was a greedy man who got what was coming to him. Next door to Sutter's is a beautiful Native American museum that the school does not even go to.
We went to the train museum like YJ said, it was so fun, I got to see the type of train my mother may have taken out here around 90 years ago from South Dakota to Los Angeles. Fantastic exhibits.
We took public transportation everywhere, along with this groovy little triangular bike thing that was part electric/part human operated, and the human drove us all around the capitol and even up on the sidewalks, he knew all the trees names and everything. We took a bus, and also a trolley.
We ate crab and did some other stuff too, there's a discovery museum and the whole trip was absolutely delightful. I can't wait to go again. Same way. You can find the groovy bike guy at the wharf, and then call him anytime you need to get around. In fact, he dropped us off at the train station in the end - we were tired! So we did in 72 hours what the school did in 16, but that's just how we roll. rolleyes:
