I have many old 8mm home movies from the 30's 40's and 50's that need to be saved. Does anyone know where can I get these movies put onto DVD? Have any of you ever done this and had good luck with it??

I know a little bit about this since it was part of my job a long time ago.
The trickiest part is making sure that the old films don't just break and split apart when you thread them in the projector - they are often very brittle.

Recently I wanted to get some old (early '90s) video put on DVD and it turns out it was less expensive to buy the machine to do the transfer than to pay to have the transfer done! I have not taken it out of the box yet, was waiting to get my desk cleared off. That's been about 6 months.

I wonder if the DVD machine has an input, and if a projector has an output, so that you can transfer film to DVD with the DVD machine?

The other, old fashioned way, is to simply project the images and record them with a stationary video camera. Sometimes this results in a visible "roll,' and sometimes not. I can tell you that when I first moved here a couple of years ago, I called around here and down to Fresno to have the service provided, and no one even called me back! Either figure out a way to do it yourself, if you're brave, or make sure you have a really reputable business handle it - you don't want someone "losing" your film.

When I finally get that box open I'll check to see if I can help you - I really need to do it myself, for work, so maybe your need will inspire me.

Several years back (in the days of VHS lol) My brother in law did this for all of our old family film reels, and it was great! He was even able to add music to it! It wasnt hard at all, so it can be done with the home kits you see advertised around. I think the hardest part was just the time consumption it took to do it and edit what he wanted on it.

It made great Christmas gifts for all of the family! as we each now have a copy of the old family movies we grew up watching!

Heidi's One Hour Photo, who used to be in biz for over 15 years, used to be able to send out to vendors for this service.

Heidi is now focusing on photography as an art but the vendors are still in business.
