Going to need you to be a lot more specific Outlook, webmail, or something else? Can you open ones already downloaded to your computer? Are these files attached to the email or a link to a download site etc etc.

BBBear did you change any localized security settings on your PC? or change virus controls etc?
Just a thought without more info ....... and also what if any warning messages are you given? when you try to open a file?

I'm trying to open attachments sent to me via email. I use yahoo for my mail. I can open them if they are already on my computer. I can click on it, say to download, say to open and then it just pretends it's doing something but never get's it open. I've also tried to save it and then open it and the same result...never gets saved.

I haven't changed a thing on my computer so that's what's so baffling. I also only get error messages and it shuts me down when I'm trying to open a video or wave file but these are just word, excel of pdf's so it's just annyoning me to death. I know I have to probably take it in to the shop but right now money is tight and God forbid I don't have my computer to entertain me at night LOL!!

After you save the file, then try to open it, does the file exist on your Desktop or wherever you chose to save it? If so, what is the file size (right-click, Properties)? If the file size is greater than zero, can you open word first, then open the file from within Word? If so, your file association is messed up and that can be fixed. If the file size is zero something is likely blocking your download attempt, like anti-virus or yahoo's internal virus check.

I understanding the "not wanting to be without a PC at nigh"t entertainment factor completly ! ROFL!
If you try what has been suggested here, and none of that works?? and if your running windows XP...there is always the easy route.... System restore!!! LOL ! Even if you have to restore farther back to a time when you know could open these files.... ( that option should be located on the system restore page..)
Right now, and this time of year? I will opt for the easiest option....ha!

It won't even allow me to save it to then try to open it so that doesn't work either.

I think I'll give that a try...nothing else seems to be working

So I think I've discovered the glich is with Yahoo. I forwarded an email with an attachment to my hotmail account and wala it opened. So I guess I'll delete Yahoo and then reinstall it to see if it fixes the issue.
Thanks to everyone for your advice!

BBBear,
Unless you're really tied to that Yahoo account, I would recommend gmail from google. It has lots of advantages over Yahoo.
