You gotta see this with Joaquin Phoenix, Letterman handles it like a pro.

Last May when Joaquin Phoenix was on Conan, he was behaving oddly... Conan asked him if he thought that he could show up the next time he was on his show (or something to that effect). Sad...

I am not a "fan" of the man, so have no clue what his normal "behavior" should be.... ~ He was able to respond to things, like asking letterman what he gassed his audience with, or taking his gum out right away when it was brought up etc.....Letterman also asked him if he could show up the next time he had him on the show also~

Are you sure its not his own "thing" or deliberate style/attempt at uniqueness that he's doing? I never watch these types of shows, so I dont have a clue.

I have seen him interviewed for the movie he did on Johnny Cash and he was perfectly normal. Maybe it was so he would get some spotlight attention. who knows?

I suppose part of me is "flashing back" to the death by drug overdose of his brother, River Phoenix outside of Johnny Depp's club several years ago. I can't help but wonder if there might be a depressive disorder that his family might be predisposed to. Don't know...

Wanted to add some info from nndb.com, which might shed some light on certain "issues".

"He is the younger brother of actor River Phoenix. His parents were missionaries for a Christian cult called Children of God, a group often alleged to have condoned pedophilia and used sex as a means of proselytizing. The Phoenix family eventually withdrew from the group. Phoenix was about six when they settled in Los Angeles. His parents hired an agent for their children, and all five kids worked in TV commercials. Home-schooled, Phoenix quit his studies in ninth grade. Like most of the Phoenix family, Joaquin is vegan."

I think he is just playing with the public, at least I hope so.
