Here is what you have all been waiting for...

Coming Soon: Oakhurst Bargain Barn
Location: Hwy 41, formerly Oakhurst Office Solutions location

My family has been in the Dollar Store business in Utah for over 15 years. Recently, my mother has moved back to Oakhurst and will be opening a new store. Although you will be able to find dollar items, this is not going to be the typical dollar store. This new store will try to stock items that you are unable to find at other local businesses. In addition, you will be able to get household items, gifts and more at reasonable prices.

Plan for an April soft opening and our Grand Opening party in May.

Stay tuned for more information.

Yes! What Iris said! .....ooooooohhhh!!! We could start "shopping" early~! :D ;)

I had a hunch it was going to be the old OOS building, (that one and KFC were the only two retail shops I could recall being empty on 41) :D

I don't know if your mom is still looking for stuff but when I was in Fresno the other day I saw that Linen & Things, next to Michaels on Blackstone is going out of business. Saw lots of empty shelf stuff in there...maybe they're selling it.

Thanks. It appears that we have most of the shelving needed. We are, however, looking for a few nice glass display cases. Also still looking for a wagon, wagon wheels and other barn style furnishings. A vending machine would also be nice. Will also need to buy some horse water troughs and some straw or hay.

Look for the Bargain Barn booth at The Coarsegold Rodeo! :) Gonna need to buy some tables and a tent/canopy for that.

Sandman, Sam's Club has some awesome tables that fold in half and have a handle so it is very easy to transport. I have some for events at the NGI and they work great.

I totally agree with monkey...Sam's club for tables. They have round or rectangle one and they are made of sturdy plastic so they're light weight too!

Congratulations, that sounds like a terrific store for the neighborhood. Did I miss it, or did you say the location?

Also, regarding the floors, if they're too pretty you can throw some straw down and if they're not pretty enough... throw some straw down! Very authentic!

Good luck, can't wait for the opening!

Location: Hwy 41, across from Days Inn. Formerly Oakhurst Office Solutions. I walked next door for a Todd's BBQ sandwich today. :)

As far as the floor goes, it was particle board underneath. :( But, we have some great ideas to paint it and make it look cool. We thought about straw, but that would be difficult to roll in freight when it's time to stock new merchandise. We may have some straw in some areas though.

You could paint the floor with glue and throw straw down. Or you could paint the floor with glue and throw chickens down. LOL

Would think you would have to be pretty careful w/straw on the floor so someone doesn't step on it and slip and fall - that would not be good.

I know they have flooring that looks like wood but that would be expensive. Too bad you don't know a good artist who could paint the log look on the floor...again though expensive. In Bars they used to thrown emply peanut shells on the floor...have a peanut eatting party :p

Red Mule
Feb 27, 2009, 08:14 AM
You could slip on peanut shells too.

I think I would just put down OSB on the floor and go for the barn look. And maybe stack a few hay bails around in place of shelves.

dancingqueen
Feb 27, 2009, 08:23 AM
What is OSB?

only1alphafemale
Feb 27, 2009, 08:54 AM
What is OSB?

Its a strand board DQ. (A type of plywood)

I did a neat trick one time on a wood deck we had, that was cheaper than most other routes were for me at that time. I painted the surface and then painted "fake rugs" on that, and sealed it. It looked really good too! (complete with fringed ends) You can do most of it with rollers, and the final smaller touches and details with a brush.

We agree. That's another reason we are not putting straw on the floors. Straw will be used on some tables and such.

Red Mule
Feb 27, 2009, 09:00 AM
I believe OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board and it looks like chunks and chips of wood pressed together. Whereas, plywood has a natural wood grain. OSB is cheaper and usually has a smoother side, if you wanted to paint it.

concerned1
Feb 27, 2009, 09:46 AM
Kilz brand wood sealer would be good to put down first. It seals the wood and primes it at the same time... they have an exterior grade product which would probably hold up better on the floor. They you could paint the floor and do the rug painting... you could paint in a "Welcome Y'all" message on the entry rug!

Good luck...

A lot of orders came in and we are spending this weekend stocking the store! My sister is even coming up from San Francisco to help us out. The biggest order comes in sometime next week. Once that is all stocked, we'll have our soft opening. We hope that could happen on Friday, but that all depends on how much help me have and how long it takes us to finish stocking.

It was a very busy day at "The Barn". Although we have been getting small shipments in for the last several weeks, today was a big day. Eleven, very full, pallets came in today with 500 boxes of merchandise. We were very busy unpacking, pricing and stocking the merchandise. Tomorrow is going to be extremely busy since we plan to open the doors on Saturday for business. The store will be about 70% stocked at first, with more products arriving daily. About five more palets will come in next week for the party, medicine and "Hunter's Isle" (pet supply) sections. Yes, Hunter gets an isle named after her.

Stop by on Saturday to check it out!

Thanks for all of the support! We do not have set hours yet, as the official Grand Opening will be in May. For now, we'll probably be there 7 days a week 10-12 hours a day to determine what the busiest hours will be. We'll probably open at 9 for now, but I'd say we'll open a bit later the first day (tomorrow) since we will be wrapping a few things up. To be safe, come after 11am tomorrow.

Shouldn't the other Bargain Barn (closed) thread be deleted and/or merged with this one?

Sandman
Apr 03, 2009, 08:38 AM
That other thread was created for the front page featured topic. Then I linked it to this one and closed it. This is the way we do all featured topics since I can not select a specific post, just a topic to feature. Once it's all setup and featured, I could merge it... but then I wouldn't be able to go back and feature it again at a later date if I decide to feature something else for a bit... so I'm gonna leave it be.

We will be doing the same thing for the rodeo in a few weeks. I do close the featured topics and link to the original so that people are not posting in two places.

My mom and I went into the bargain barn about 12:30, they are still busy stocking shelves. There were several customers, well more than a several probably a dozen or more when we were there. They have a great variety of stuff and looked as if there was lots that still needed to be unpacked and shelved and Mat said there is lots more coming in next week. When we got in the car my mom said to me, I think that is a stop we need to make every week and check out the new items. Best wishes for a very successful business.

I like Saturday market too. Sometimes I walk out with nothing at all and sometimes they have exactly what I am looking for, I check them first for office supplies. I could just kick myself, one time they had professioal chef jackets, the white double button ones, my boys would have loved them, went back a couple days later and they were gone. Learned my lesson. They had a fantastic deal on solar shades a couple of months ago, they had 3 different colors but not enough of any one color to do my big sunroom. AND the owners are just so super nice and helpful, they make you want to keep coming back and supporting them. I no longer go to the $1 store or the Grocery Outlet. If either of those places get better about quality and pricing I hope someone posts it here on the forum.

I met Sandman's mom on Sat. Super nice lady and she looks just like Sandman! Great store - lots of kitchen gadgets and a good store for travelers who don't want to pay lots of $$ for shampoo, paper goods, etc. that they forgot to bring with them.

I would not worry too much about the rumors of a dollar store opening in Oakhurst. The Bargain Barn has good quality merchandise and the best customer service.
