I got a "new" couch that needs to be reupholstered. Does anyone know of anyone in the area?

Any guesses as to the average cost for a 6 foot couch and love seat?

There used to be a man in Oakhurst, his shop was in one of those buildings in Industrial Plaza up behind the old hardware store. About 6 years ago he reupholstered the seat on an antique quilting chair for us. He did a beautiful job. Just one small cushion was about $100.00. I don't know if he is still in business. It also is not a quick process, they usually do not have room to store your furniture and they are sometimes a month or more behind in orders. So they call you when it is your turn, so to speak. Having furniture reupholstered is very expensive, but if it is really good furniture it is worth it. I would think that it would cost about $1000.00 for the love seat and $1,600 - $2,000 for a 6 ft sofa. If it is something that has been in the family for generations, like my chair has been, then it is worth more than words can say. One other thought, you might want to call Babbett at A Bit Of Yarn and ask her if she knows someone who does upholstering in the area, she does a lot of sewing for people in town.

That much? :o Maybe I'll buy an old sheet and superglue it on. :D

I'll be in town next week, I'll stop by the yarn place and ask.

I cannot shop at walmart, but I'll check out the other places. The couch/loveseat have good fabric on them, it's just too gaudy for me. It's a really ugly 1950's floral pattern.

Target has nice covers, or you can try Anna's Linens.

Make sure you measure well, perhaps you can find something on Amazon or Ebay.

Ok, now that you have told us that the fabric is in really good shape, you just do not like the pattern, that is a different story. On the east coast and in the south a lot of people use upholstery fabric spray paint. That may sound very strange but it is very easy to use and the results are beautiful. My son bought a couple of upholstered chairs that are in really good shape but he does not like the floral print. He found a great selection of this product on the internet. There is even a video of how to apply the product. We looked at stores in Fresno such as Joanne Fabric and Michaels but they did not stock the product. I have never done it all by myself but I have helped my aunt do it a couple of times. She always did it outside. I do not think that I would pay to have perfectly good fabric taken off of a piece of furniture. I think that the slip covers that are sold at Target, Penney's etc, look good when you first put them on but in no time they are a mess and you spend all of your time fixing them. Custom made slip covers is a nother way to go but I think they are in the same price range as having the furniture reupholstered. Babbett may know someone who makes slip covers too. If I were you I would check out the upholstery spray paint. Good luck and have fun. David V the decorator.

It is very pricey to have done, and even comparable or beyond the price of a new set of furniture!

If you can find the slip covers that would be the way to go, unless you think perhaps you can tackle it yourself, but even upholstery fabric can run quite a bit per yard.

I have an antique couch that we use everyday, but I purchased a nice quilt that I use on it for a throw cover, to help protect it and it looks nice, but like DQ mentions its a continual "straightening up" task.

I've never heard of the fabric spray that DQ mentioned, but I really like the sounds of that! Thanks for that DQ! I might look into that for a set of drapes I wish were a different color!

I was just reading about a person who bought a home that had very expensive good quality drapes, but they hated the print. They took them to a large dry cleaner and they dyed them for them and they really looked beautiful. They warned you that this is not a project to try at home if the drapes are expensive. ONE OTHER THOUGHT. Many years ago when we were living in Chicago, my mother wanted to have a large chair reupholsterd and was just shocked at the cost, this was probably 50 years ago, I was just a kid. She found an adult ED class that was teaching upholstery. You bring your own project and leave it in the class room. So she learned to upholster herself and did many projects throughout the years. It takes a lot of strength in your arms and hands so she does not do it any more. I even remember one time when she finished a chair and I sat down in it and put my hand down the outside of it and something taped back at me, she had left a scewdriver inside the chair. Too much trouble to take it apart, so there it stayed for many years. My sister eventually got that chair and reupholstred it and it is in her livingroom in Oregon. If you do decide to take a class and need some help or have a question I am sure my mom would be glad to help you out.

Thanks everyone. I looked at slip covers and none of them look like they'd fit this couch. This couch has wooden arms and not the padded ones in the pictures.

Maybe I'll try the spray paint. One seam has let go a little, but I can fix that. And... I can sew, maybe I'll reupholster it myself.

We just bought a beautiful rattan and fabric chaise lounge. It had some stains on it that looked like coffee and we thought we would be able to have them removed. Our carpet and furniture cleaning guy was not able to remove them and he thinks they are stains from varnish that was used on the rattan, that bled when it was being stored before it was sold. We would like to have it reupholstered. It is a large piece and we need to have someone come out to the house and give us an estimate as to the cost. We have contacted 2 local upholstery businesses, one in Awahanne and one in Oakhurst. They are very nice and say they will be out but it has been over a week and even with one repeat call no one has shown up. Does anyone know of a good upholstery person that needs some business?

I gave up on the couch. It cost too much to reupholster, the spray paint for fabric was nice, but didn't cover the pattern enough. I put the couch up for free on Freecycle and someone is going to look at it today - hopefully they'll haul it off before I have to take it to the dumps.

I wish I knew of a good, cheap, upholsterer.

Well, it is 6:15 and I just called one upholsterer that I have already called twice and was supposed to be here between 4-5, so that makes it the 3rd and last call to him. Just wondering if you got delayed and are still planning on coming out tonight. Tomorrow morning I will call the one that did a small piece for us a few years ago, for the second time and I went a page back in the phone book and saw another local business, I think I will call them too. I really thought when I started making these phone calls that I might have a good chance of having it done by Thanksgiving, now I am not keeping my fingers crossed. I really want to give the business to someone local, but by the end of the week I will start calling Fresno and Clovis.
