> I am writing this in response to an incident that happened on June 19, 2004. > My fiancé and his family came to Oakhurst to meet my family. We made reservations at Castillo's' Mexican Restaurant 49271 Golden Oak Loop Oakhurst, CA 93644. > When we arrived at the restaurant, the Owner, Greg Anguiano looked very upset that we had arrived. A waitress told us they were very busy. So we waited patiently to be seated. When we were seated, we were told by Mr. Anguiano we would have to move our own tables so that we could all sit together. We did so, with no complaints. We did not receive enough napkins, nor silverware for our party. When we asked for more we got rolled eyes from a waitress and they were handed to my mother to pass out. We did not receive any refills for our drinks, and the food was passed out with much of it missing... for example, my cousin ordered fajitas and they came with out tortillas. We did not complain, we knew they were busy, so we tried to be patient. Because we had a large group, they automatically added on a gratuity. However, my fiancé did not feel that was right, so when we received the bill, he went to complain to the manager about our service for the entire night. When he went to complain, Mr. Anguiano got very defensive and began to yell at my fiancé. He told him he would remove the gratuity, however, " (he) had put with crap from (our) party all night". Then he began to yell some more telling my fiancé he needed to leave his restaurant right then or he would get him arrested. He had a waiter call the police. My fiancé did nothing wrong. I am writing this because it really bothered me. I always felt safe in Oakhurst. I was proud to bring my new family up to see where I had grown up. But, unfortunately due to the actings of Mr. Anguiano, my new family is afraid to come to Oakhurst.

I'm sure, like at all restaurants, some people have had marvelous service and food at Castillos and others will never go back. Thought I'd share an experience that I had there last May.
My co-workers and I were having lunch, and it's a good thing I eat slow and carefully, because there was a piece of broken glass about the size of a quarter in my refried beans. I had it in my mouth but did not get cut or bite down hard on it.
I thought I would let the waitress who served us know about it, mostly to prevent anyone else from getting hurt in case there was more glass in the bean pot.
I was surprised when their solution to the problem was just to ask me if I would like to have some more!

WOW! You were lucky you didn't bite or swallow it. I actually prefer El Cid's, but my husband likes Castillo's. We usually eat at the one in Oakhurst and have had fair service and good food.

Funny thing is, it was the SECOND time I got glass in my food while out having lunch with my co-workers! I teased them by saying I was beginning to get suspicious! The first time was at a soup luncheon at a church (not the soup and salad one at the Lutheran church) and evidently the glass lid of a crock pot chipped a piece into the soup! That's something we might all consider when we use our crock pots ... the lids can and do chip off sometimes.

I am a regular at Castillos in Oakhurst and have had excellent service everytime. By regular I mean once a week. Those Shrimp a la Diabla are to die for. I am responding to the gal's incident with her fiance. I would be ashamed to write about my fiance almost getting arrested at a restaurant(wow)he must have caused quit a scene in order for a restaurant owner to get soooooo upset. I have a suggestion leave your fiance at home next time you want to have a pleasant time in a nice restaurant.
I think if have a good or bad comment about any place in this great town you should have the nerve to also leave your name and be accountable for your comments.
yours truely,

Ive been to the Oakhurst Castillos' three times, once w/family, and every time the service was the pits, there was nobody there to greet us, and there were plenty of tables empty, and we sat with other couples waiting to be seated, one time we were seated after waiting way to long, and we never saw the server again and so we walked out, and the other 2 darn times we all got frustrated and left because we never got seated, so I too will never go back, but I have heard that Bass lake is a way better place to eat, but have not been so I really cant vote, I'd rather wait 5-10 minutes at the crowded El Sids then ever go back to Oakhurst Castillo's, now I know why El Sids is crowded, because they take pride in there service, and I love the friendly people, and now that I know all the employees, and the owner Tony's the best, and Deana the bartender now always has our drinks ready after she see's us walk through the door, now thats service!!! I also love Jodi and her mother Debbie who are the best servers.

Tia Marias had the best and what I consider the only true mexican food here.....they had Mole and all .... however.... they left with the Casino opening up ......

They were a true family business.....

Took local checks... no credit cards

Tia Marias was located in the building that a leather shop is in now. I never ate there but I was told by others that at the time it was the best mexican food in the mountains. The best mexican food in the mountains is El Cid. On a Friday or Saturday night you can have a problem finding a place to Park.

Hey are you talking about Tia Rita's? Where the now leather shop is? That was my all time favorite. Does anyone know if the family is still around and if they will reopen somewhere else? Boy do I miss them http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/sad2.gif.

Holy cow, the service at Castillo's tonight was REALLY bad. I waited 20 minutes for the check, our table was cleared and everything (by the new owner)! I had to get up and go to the register to ask for my check. They also started putting rice in the tostada, wtf?

Castillo's has sold to new owners. Has anyone been there since, and how is the food now? Do you know if they have kept the same staff and recipes?

I hadn't eaten at Castillo's since about 1996 in Mariposa. I am pregnant and craving Mexican food, and instead of waiting at El Cid's (the usual place for us) we decided to give Castillo's a go. Let me tell you it was horrible. The service totally blew, our food took 25 minutes to get to our table, and ironically enough, the entire wait staff seemed to be under the influence of methamphetamines. No kidding, it was awful. We weren't the only people to notice. After waiting about 15 minutes to get our check (we asked for it when our food arrived) the people seated in the booth next to us started yelling at the owner that they were having horrible service and that it didn't seem like a family atmosphere, what was wrong with everyone working there, etc etc. I will never ever go back to Castillo's, to put it bluntly-- waiting half an hour for a crappy table at El Cid's is better than getting some food to go from Castillo's.

I'm not a big fan of the Castillo's in Oakhurst but the one in Bass Lake is excellent. Bass Lake Castillo's is owned by the mother of the Oakhurst restaurant and has better service and food. Love it!!!

you can be safe once again and you can also go back to Castillos that %&^#% Greg no longer owns it, has a new owner now. I was eating there once with a few people and one of them found a piece of glass about the size of a dime in here beans & the waitress was so rude about it she just rolled her eyes and said i'll take that sorry about that! and that was all! not even a sincere opology and with an attitude too as if the customer had done something wrong to the waitress, very bad business people in my opinion!!!! glad they are gone, hopefully the waitress too!! new owners are nice, hope they stay that way!!

OK, I have been back to Castillos twice since my last post. My second time back was because I had to eat there-- there was a party there I had to go to-- the food was good (except my well steak came back medium) and the service was good.

On my birthday I went there again for the jalapeno steak (I really liked it the second time I went).. well I totally am POed now, and will not be patronizing Castillos in Oakhurst ever again.

First of all: The service sucked so BAD... we had a crappy waitress-- we waited 10 minutes to get a drink order in.. she was totally rude, never did find out her name..
we get our drinks and a bowl of salsa and chips.. and then the waitress goes on break for 10 more minutes, then takes our order...
about 30 minutes later the food arrives.. mine is horribly undercooked.. medium is an overstatement for my well-well done preferred and we stated to the lazy waitress three time that is how I wanted it.
Meanwhile, my newborn wakes up... so, of course, discreetly and quietly and in the booth I nurse him. A "tweeky" looking hostess comes up to refresh our chips.. and sees I am nursing. She freaked out I guess, went to the other waitress (not ours unfortunetly because I liked her) and said I needed to "go outside" because I was "gross" for breastfeeding my baby in public.
If she had said this to me I would of completely lost it..
So when the waitress (not ours) told me this as I was changing my son in the bathroom a little bit later, I was very upset. My guess is the tweeker looking chick, who I found out bottle fed her baby, was jealous of the bond, or is just an immature child herself.
Well then about 10 minutes after my steak disappeared to get cooked it reappeared OK.. but with no tortillas.. I ended up getting the tortillas with the check. The lazy waitress stood above us as we filled out the Credit card reciept, so we filled in a minimal tip. (I didn't want to give them a penny more then they deserved)..

I hate this place, the food was crap, the service was so sub-standard you would of thought they were busy (there were 2 other tables when we got there, and we were the second to last to leave), and the friendly-ness of the place was nonexistant.

Not only will I not patronize this crap of an establishment again, I recommend highly that the rest of you stay away as well.

BTW, for all the ignorant little hostesses out there, it is my LEGAL right to nurse my child any damn place I please.

Yosemite Joy,

I know you're mad and have every right to be, but why not talk to the owners about your really bad experience? Why not let them know what you didn't like about your visit...the poor service, the substandard food, the poor treatment, the "tweeky" hostess", etc? The current owner has only been running the place since October, I believe...and if he knew how bad your experience was and how you feel you'll never go back and are telling other's they shouldn't go there too...I'm sure he'd do whatever he could to fix things. Maybe he doesn't know the cook he had on was not filling the orders right, that his waitress was taking a break at an inappropriate time, that his hostess is rude and has no knowledge about a woman's right to breastfeed anywhere anytime. Maybe he's not there supervising his crew...or maybe his manager is doing a poor job of it. And maybe, he needs to be more hands on. Anyway, I just think that Castillo's would probably like to know if they're doing some things, or everything for that matter, wrong ...so they can try to improve. I'm sure they don't want to go out of business...and be the "bad" talk of the town.

Turn this negative into a positive. Heck, you might even get a free meal and the red carpet rolled out for you!

Just my thoughts.

Alice

WOW!! havnt heared a tongue lashing like that since my dad caught my first girlfriend sneaking into my room when i was a kid.
castillos help yourself my friends, your killin yourself.

it is under new owner ship and most of these posts look fairly old. it is another option in leau of el cids town so a fresh start and a new beginning could be worth a second shot??
( i did have ants crawling all over my table the last time i went there and it was under the new owners but it could have been a fluke)

Yosemite Joy

There was, to my knowledge, no manager on last night.

I also would like to add, that they closed before 8pm, (we got there at 730) and then were incredibly rude to everyone who walked in after they were closed. One girl (not the tweeky one, the cashier maybe?) actually laughed at a customer. IMO, when the time changes and it stays light later, restaurant hours should adjust as well. And in my experience in the restaurant business, as a waitress, hostess, and bus person in my teenage years, you never laugh at a customer, and you never ever walk around saying how "bored" you are.

I know where you are coming from Alice. But, I am not going to waste my time with incompetence. If the owner/manager/etc is too ______ to see that his hostess is on uppers, his waitress is lazy, and his cook can't get an order right... what is left to say? These are not new employees, they are the same (the hostess and waitress) as they were from the first post I made about Castillos.

AND I would love to add, that the first time I went a woman complained to the owner right in the next booth. She said that they weren't giving the right amount of attn that customers deserved, and that the food was cold... the owner didn't do much to help them out. She stormed out angry.

I have to agree with Yosemite Joy, the one in Oakhurst is the worst, I went there 3 times and every time we left because the service was terrible, 1st time we sat in the front lobby until time we got seating a 1/2 hour later, then never saw a server again and walked out, 2nd time same thing but this time I had family, never even got seated and my brother said forget this, the 3rd time just me and the wife, no one up front and people waiting, finally got seating and again never saw the sever, no water, no drinks, got my own menus... total loser of a place, would never go there again, and would never, ever tell any one to go to this piece of crap place.... one of the worse restuarants ever been to, never been to the one at Bass Lake, but never again Oakhurst, I'd rather have a TV dinner....

I'll definitely second that. i haven't gone since around Dec. when we were virtually ignored, a party of 10 women & they couldn't get us a drink! aggggghhhh
When I went for lunch with my daughter, we had a terrible time getting our order in, then the server dropped a tray of dishes/glasses all over and just left them there for an incredibly long time, (15 min??)
I do like their avocado salsa, but will live without it.

I've only eaten at Castillo's a few times long ago when it was actually run by the Castillo's. I remember their prices were kind of high compared to El Cid, and I just preferred El Cid's food anyway...so never really went there much except if others made the plans to meet there. But it's been years!
