It was here a long time ago "LuLu's Take N Bake" MaryLou Finley. It was located at the end of where the Children's Museum is now.

Speaking of Pizza.... what Oaky needs is the Pool Hall back. It was over there in the shopping center between Lucys and the Petes. You could order food.... and they would go to one of the other restaurants and bring it to ya. Beer was served at the pool hall, but it wasn't like going to the OakRoom. I liked that place.

i agree that the pool hall was a fun place. in all honesty though i saw more drugs being dealt out of that place then any other in town. people just didnt notice it as much since the place appeared to be clean and upscale. there were also a few fights in the parking lot that i witnessed. i stopped bringing my kids there because i didnt want them to be around that environment. i would like to see a pool hall in this town and would hope they could have a security guard on duty or something to keep it safe for the kids.

We tried this place out last night. It was ok. I liked the bbq chicken pizza. The kids still prefer Round Table because it has less of that pesky wheat crust. Nice to have pizza that is truly right out of the oven. We'll likely try it again.

It's my understanding they will make a pizza with your specifications. So maybe ask about regular crust?

We asked for wheat specifically. The kids did not enjoy our decision....but we did :)

I remember the pool hall. I love going in there and playing in the tournaments! I would love to see something like that come back to the area...I love to play pool but I don't like the bar scene...been there done that!

I liked the old pool place too. Bars are just not that good for me. Fattening, if nothing else. :)
As far as drug deals going on... They probably go on in the park, in supermarket parking lot, and at the school, just to name a few. And we still let our kids go there.

We had two pizza's from Sugar Pine yesterday. I ordered one with the white sauce and one with the Red. Very good! I preferred the white sauce over the red only because the red had alot of sauce. But I cant wait to try the crab and shrimp with artichoke hearts. My husband who is not a fan of pizza at all, is craving it again today! The monthly special is a good deal, it is a two topping large for $6.00. The staff was very friendly, I was in and out in about five minutes. Once I got them home and baked them they baked perfectly according to the directions. I too will recommend them to everyone I know. I hope they are able to make it up here.

Is the restaurant associated with the the camp? or the railroad?

Went there last week, ordered 2 they were having trouble with their machine so ours were hand made so it kinda took awhile, got home put in the Oven, very impressed, we had friends come over and they brought 3 more on the way, now we know what taste we like.
My favs so far
1. I like the sausage / mushroom W/reg Pesto sause (not the creamy) don't like mayo.
2. peperoni/sausage with spicy red sauce
Can't beat it for $6.00

From what I understand the 6 dollar pizza is only temporary special.
Had them twice. The pizza is OK, the service is lacking. But they are new, so maybe they will improve. They had better, or they will be gone before long.

I agree Yosemite, we found when we ordered agian, we called ahead of time, and picked them up, our friends who ordered had to leave her husband there and come back later to pick him up and her pizza's and they still were not ready.. : (
but I love fresh made products, and with the right combination they are great pizza's especailly for being in Oakhurst.
By the way how ya doing?, are still living next to my rentals, any new problems?

I waited not 5 to 10 minutes, but a full 25 minutes for two take and bake pizzas and an order of breadsticks. There was one other customer in there, she ordered a single take and bake, five minutes after I paid for mine. And the $4.25 for the breadsticks was ridiculous when I got the four barely cooked breadsticks home, they were awful with tons of cheese and stuck to the pan.
cinni
Mar 31, 2009, 03:40 PM
I read the latest comments about the Sugar Pine Take and Bake, they are really going out of their way to give great customer service. They want to hear from their customers and fix their mistakes. Example I ordered the cheesy bread sticks, they were made with parmesean and mozzerella, and garlic, they were served on a cardboard round like the pizza, there were more than four now I think there were 6 or 7. They were yummy. I think they need grace, they are a family operation and eager to please. Just let them know and they try to do it better next time.

As far as I can tell, most of the reviews have been positive. But, I don't think just because someone wasn't happy is any reason for the GRUMBLE FLAKES & SOURE MILK FIRST" comment.
I realize that perhaps it was only meant as a friendly joke. But, it also demeans their opinion, which is just as valid as anyone else that gave a positive review. I realize it isn't always comfortable hearing criticism, but listening to it with an open mind can be a lot more helpful than ignoring it.

Sour Milk and Grumble flakes aside, they may have just been having a tough day, there are always a few bugs to work out at the start of anything new. Things seem to be working smoother now. Like all good things they come to those who wait and have patience. This is Good stuff.

Why do we assume that people are with the business just because they have good things to say about a place. Perhaps they are just upbeat people who want to see others succeed, or even perhaps they just like the food. Who knows but as for me personally I just like to see us give everyone a chance.

I think Monkey was asking DD that question, I think mostly because a persons first posts as a member started the same time as the this thread went up, and only posted in that thread, thats all, and I guess its good to know that people are not trying to take advantage of using alias to post when they have alternative motivations to do so, not that anyones doing so here  ;)

I agree with what you are saying, but it could be also that they are new to the site and just learning. We never know. I am new to this site and blogging in general, I am also learning to twitter and facebook. All new at the same time. Could be they have not found anything else intersting to blog about yet either. At any rate we are all entitled to our opinions and interests.

I went into Sugar Pine Pizza this afternoon after bridge lessons, I was all prepared to buy a pizza and bring it home for dinner tonight. I looked over their menu and said to the 2 girls sitting behind the counter. Wow, your prices are really high for take and bake aren't they? One looked at the other one and she said, actually, no, they are about $5.00 less than other places. I kind of was in shock at the prices so I may not have this exactly correct but I think the mediums were about $12.99 and the large were about $14.99. Again, I may be wrong because at the same time I was looking at the prices I was thinking, isn't this more than we pay to go into any pizza place in town for fresh hot pizza and they do the dishes for me. So I just smiled and said I thought I would pass on ordering. On the way home I passed the pizza place in Coarsegold and they have a huge sign out front X-Large pizza $13.99. We have always liked their pizza, think I will stick with them. Now, I do wish I had gotten a slice so I atleast knew if I liked it or not. I know a lot of you bought their pizza when it was on special for $6.00, is it worth more than twice that amount? If the answer is yes, yes, yes, yes, I may have to change my mind and give them a try.

Not a word was mentioned about any specials. Maybe the managment should tell the staff to mention the specials. I am really surprised that they did not say anything since I made it pretty clear that I was not ordering because of the price. If I would have known about the special I would have tried it for sure.

Apr 28, 2009, 04:12 AM
Hey I noticed the new posts about the pricing for the pizza, I did some research of my own...The Mariposa Take and Bake pizza ex-large specialty pizza is $19.95 and the other places like Round Table their ex-large specialty pizzas run $22.95, Me and Eds are up around 22.95 to 24.95 and Pizza Factory has all different prices but their most expensive ex-large is $20.55.
They are all pretty much running specials, like Round Table Large Pepperoni was is now 12.99. Don't know about the one in Coarsegold have not been but have been told they are more expensive. I didn't compare all of the pizza's but I don't think they are more expensive just comparable. I heard they are going to always have a monthly special there is a sign posted at the register with the monthly special. You are right though the employees should point out the monthly special.
Also I noticed you mentioned about the cooking of the pizza, they will cook the pizza for you if you ask they are not just take and bake.
All things aside their flavors are fantastic they have some things the others don't have like the wheat crust and best of all you can have it the way you want it.
Mibrew
Apr 28, 2009, 05:46 AM

cinni
May 02, 2009, 06:27 PM
From what I know they are going to always have some sort of special running. I believe the $6.00 special is gone for now it has been replaced by ex-lrg 1 topping pizza for $10.00. But I also came across two other coupons running, one is on the chamber page $3.00 off any ex-lrg specialty and on merchant circle 10% off any order.
As for suggestions the Chicken ranch tastes pretty good if you like chicken on a pizza, they have great sauces, bbq chicken also good. But the family loves the old stand by's pepperoni, sausage. They have so much to choose from haven't had anything bad yet.

A friend of mine brought me in there yesterday, and we had the veggie pizza with wheat crust.
It was AMAZING!! I loved it!
From now on, this is where I will get my pizza.
OH, and the owner...can't remember his name right now...was super nice and eager to hear anything we had to say about the pizza or anything else.
I have to say, it's refreshing to interact with a business owner who actually cares what the customer thinks, and is willing to make changes.
There are only a few I know of in town who are like that.
So, Of course I had to come here and let everyone know about my experience.

I "won" a pizza a month for one year at an event through raffle or silent auction, can't remember which. Anyway, the first time I went, I was dissapointed to have to wait as long as I did for a pizza that I would still have to cook at home. i thought I would rectify that by callin in my order for 2 pizzas (one free and one I would pay for) on my next visit. When I arrived to pick up my order, they had only made one, claimed they misheard me on the phone. I left with the free one and did not wait for the extra I was planning to pay for. I am hoping their service improves so that i have a chance to use my remaining 10 months worth of pizzas.

Hi Robb.
Love your pizza, at least the 2 different types I've had. I've been in there a few times, but I keep ordering either the veggie or the garlic chicken artichoke, both on the wheat crust! SO GOOD!!! I tell myself I'm going to order something else to try but then I don't!
Anyway, question for you. Do you happen to have nutritional values for your pizzas? At least the combos? I try to keep track of the calorie and protein levels that I'm eating and have been trying to guess based on mainline pizza joints. Not sure I'm even close. Hoping I'm at least over-estimating just in case! LOL!
Thanks in advance either way!

The other day I had the Garlic Chicken & Artichoke Pizza. In a word YUMMY!!! That was the best tasting Pizza I've had in a long time and I could taste Olive Oil in the dough...love that!!! It also wasn't greasy like the other places in town seem to be and didn't seem to upset my tummy like the others do. I'll definately be back to try the other versions especially the Pesto Shrimp...mouth watering already!!!

Ive got an interesting story, the first time I went in there the owner and two sons where working the younger of the boys was inthusiasticly helping dad the woman in front of me had opted to have her food cooked at shuger
pine when the boy took the pizza out of the oven it broke in half the same boy made my take and bake. i orderd a combo and got the all meat??? any way the kid reminded me of my self so much when i was that age that i just smiled and took the pizza. Ive gone back 3 more times sence, and it gets better and better every time. thay have my bissuness for shure, best pizza in oakhurst hands down, the wheat crust is to die for. so now i look at it kinda like going to a comedy show and leaving with a pizza.
my famley is not wealthy im raising to step kids and supporting my wife through collage with no child support. we use ebt, and thay take food stamps so its a sight for sore eyes. "robb" thanks for doing the comunity a favor by offering such delishous food to every one even people who have money problems.

If you like garlic, and you have to like garlic b/c there's a lot on it, try the Garlic Chicken & Artichoke pizza. I put it on whole wheat. Didn't know they had a sourdough crust. I'd have been all over that one if I knew!
I've also had their veggie on whole wheat. Very good too but as I LOVE garlic, I keep getting the GC&A! I honestly haven't tried anything else, again b/c I am stuck on the GC&A!! I had the veggie the first time I went, then the next time tried the GC&A. That's as far as I got! LOL! Every time since has been the GC&A!!
If you're a garlic lover like I am, most places don't put enough garlic on, they do. I've never had to worry that there's not enough garlic on the pizza!
I was in Sacramento last weekend and we went to a pizza place in old Folsom. They have a pizza called the Stinking Rose. It's a garlic and shrimp pizza. Great pizza with whole roasted cloves of garlic on it. But alas, not enough garlic on it!
I could just sit and eat whole roasted cloves of garlic! Oh and the green olives stuffed with cloves of garlic! Yummm! Oh and if a recipe calls for garlic, I always at least double the amount it calls for! I throw it in veggie sautees and soup, anytime I can get away with trowing it in, I do so and as much as I can! Told ya I love garlic!
Anyway, I got side-tracked! Take a good look at their menu when you go. I've heard everything is good and maybe someday I'll be able to say that myself if I can stop ordering the GC&A! LOL! But other than their specialty pizzas, they also have make your own pizzas too. Lots of different sauces and toppings of all sorts so you can get really creative. And several different crusts too. Lots of good stuff!

I don't know how they do it but it works for me! DD and I are on our own this weekend and yesterday we basically ate pizza all day! Good thing I only got the medium!
OK, I think they are redeemed in my eyes. Tonight I called in my order at 5 and asked that it be ready (and baked) for pick up at 6. I arrived at 6 and everything was great. I much prefer having them bake it because I have a difficult time with the paper they provide to bake it on. To top it off, I had missed using my July free pizza so he let me redeem July and August tonight!

Although, man, the garlic was good, but on the heavy side -- I suppose we can ask for lighter garlic next time. We had you bake it for us and I took it home. My wife's car stilled smelled of garlic today!
The owner is very nice also, we will give him more business in the future.

I was was catching up on back issues of the Sierra Star and ran across this great little article:
One family's dream is more than just pizza
http://www.sierrastar.com/104/story/49417.html (for the whole article)
Fleener said Oakhurst did have other pizza places but the town did not have a take-and-bake pizza restaurant.
They also made sure they had a good grade of excellence -- Fleener, his wife Cinnamon Fleener, mother-in-law Dorothy Dein and daughter Kassie Zheng all went to Washington to be trained by a private take-and-bake business owner. There they learned gourmet recipes.
The two most popular pizzas are spicy hot Italian and garlic chicken-artichoke, according to Zheng, Sugar Pine Gourmet Pizza manager.
Another aspect to keeping their grade of excellence, according to Fleener, is the quality of the ingredients that are used. They chop their own vegetable toppings, grate their own cheese and make pizza dough from stone-ground whole-wheat flour, making sure their ingredients are always fresh.
Congrats on the great write up!! And keep those artichoke pizzas coming!!

Yes, thats exactly what I thought a "mixer" was - mingle, drink and free food. The few times I attended I thought it was great - BUT I am not a business owner! Went on the tails of those who were LOL! I guess it could be considered "clicky" but I always went with a bunch of friends. PLUS, it does help the community get acquainted with new business owners. You don't need to be a business owner. I don't even think you have to be a chamber member. I went several times before joining the chamber, and if you join as an individual instead of a business owner, it's a lot cheaper (something like $80 for the year). And considering there are 24 mixers a year, that's about $3 a meal for all you can eat. That's a better deal than you get at the casino. So don't be shy about showing up.

Here is some feedback for you: how about full disclosure on "DD" and "Cinni," including the information that they are not just customers but perhaps more involved in the business than has been indicated? That is misrepresentation. Add homophobia to that mix (DD) and the pizza doesn't taste as good as it once did. Why would you use the forum to openly promote your business -- and continue to do so as recently as last week -- without admitting who you are? It's pretty easy to figure out once a reader has scanned the article posted on this thread. Either that, or it's one damn fine coincidence.
This kind of ridiculous subterfuge makes me question your "ingredients."

We finally tried the pizza last night and were very impressed. We had an extra large 1/2 combo and 1/2 chicken garlic and artichoke on the double sourdough. Simply amazing. The best we have had in a long time. We had it baked and it was done just as we like it.
One thing that was missing... grease. It was not greasy at all!! :)
Well done Jean and all at Sugar Pine.
We will be a repeat customer. :foodpizza:

I got to try some Sugar Pine pizza today, and I must say that it was pretty good. I was impressed with all of the unique ingredients, but even more impressed with the owner. These are good people with a good product. This seems to be a dying breed in Oakhurst lately. I hope they do well.

I do not agree, I think that we have so many wonderful business owners in Oakhurst and in Coarsegold. Many go out of their way to give you really good customer service. My mom and I were in a local store this afternoon, Charles not only gave us a 10% discount because we shop in his store often, but he asked, sincerely, are there items that you would like us to carry that we are not carrying. I don't think that our local stores with good customer service are a dying breed at all.

Got in our order for 5 pizzas in at the Oakroom for the Super Bowl. :hungry: Chicken Terriaki, Garlic Chicken with Artichokes, Pepperoni, Sausage, and Cheese.
We're also thinking of doing a kind of orderve(sp?) cook off. Several people were talking the other day, and Jay makes some 'beer rocks' out of ground beef & cabbage wrapped in dough, while Jeff does a Bratwurst wrapped in instant crescent rolls with cheese.
Also note - the Oakroom wants to thank SUGAR PINE PIZZA for donating ONE FREE ANY STYLE LARGE PIZZA as a 2nd place prize for the Nuts & Bolts party at the Oakroom on Feb 6'th. Hopefully its not too stale by that time, however :getsick:

I've been wanting to get this review out for a couple weeks now, but haven't had the time. As many of you know, I often work at the Queens Inn for the ladies when their schedules cause them to be away...
We often get requests for the best restaurants to go to...
well, I always offer Woodys, Petes, and now, Sugar Pine..
It didn't start that way, but I am so impressed with the business ethics of Rob that I will always be sure to put in a good word for him.
We were staying at the Queens for a few days over New Years and ordered Sugar Pine. There was a bit of confusion with the order, and it took a lot longer than anticipated, but in the end, Rob proved to be an outstanding business owner and took care of my issue quickly and politely.
A customer came in a few nights ago and requested I call in her pizza order...so I thought I'd get a small pizza, too... It was delivered (at no extra charge) hot, crispy and delicious! I personally love the BBQ chicken pizza and can't wait until next week when I'm working again so I can order another... (maybe someday I will be able to get one delivered to my house, right now I'm a bit too far off the map to get anything delivered...) ;)
Thanks Rob for the impressive service & I'll be sure to recommend you to anyone who asks...

Rob is great and so is the pizza. I order one every week. They have delivered to my house, my office and The Oak Room! I have had the chance to try just about everything on the menu and have been happy with everything! The latest delivery to my office (a few days ago) was the Chicken Club Pizza. It may be my new favorite. It was delicious!!!
I first met Rob at Queen's Inn (my neighbor) several months ago. I introduced myself and he instantly recognized me as "Sandman".
I have referred many people to Sugar Pine Pizza and all that I have referred have been pleased. The price is good, the service is good and the pizza is very good!
I'd also like to thank Rob for supporting this website! Check out his banner that appears on each page. :)
If you have not tried Sugar Pine Pizza, I suggest that you do! You'll be glad you did.
