Does anyone know if the wildflowers are in bloom yet at Hite Cove? I was hoping to go hiking up there next weekend and wondered if the "time is right" or we are too early or too late. Any and all info will be appreciated! Thanks

It looks like it's in bloom. If you visit www.goldrushcam.com today's picture of the day shows the Merced River canyon. It looks pretty spectacular!

Thanks for sharing that site...I had never been to it! I hope the rain doesn't dim those flowers before Friday...cannot get up there until then. What are your thoughts about whether there will still be a "show" by Friday?

Thanks again so much.

I noticed the lupine in bloom along hwy 49 today! I imagine that after the storm comes through, It may hold off some of the wildflowers for a few days. I ran down to Merced and the foothills are just busting out with orange and yellow flowers. Since it's just starting I think next week will be awesome.

Thanks so much for the update...I'll try to be patient until I can get up there on Friday and see the flowers!

Maybe we should all meet at Hite Cove and hike together on Friday afternoon? We will be getting there about 1 or 1:30.

I'd love to, but my fear of heights keeps me from doing Hite's Cove again. I'm going to take photos of the Merced River Canyon.

Are you going to take the photos from various spots along 140 or where are the best places? Any "secret spots" that are the photographer's top choice other than Hite Cove and along 140?

Spoiler Alert!!

Here’s a short video of the California Poppy bloom that’s along burned area of Hwy 140 leading into Yosemite. It was shot by Chris Falkenstein (http://vimeo.com/yosemite). If you can get there, I’d say go for it.

One of the shots actually looks like flames, burning in the already charred brush!

We made the trip today, of course the poppies not in full bloom due to the storm we had. I am going to try to go again this week, so I can see this wonderful site in full BLOOM. I would urge everyone to make the drive, it is so good for the soul.

Thanks to everyone for the updated "status reports"...I just can't wait until Friday when I can see it, hike it, and photograph it for myself in wonderful weather. The last time I hit it so perfectly in bloom was 3 years ago...a bit too late or too early every other year.

Aren't we lucky we live in a place where we can spend time looking at such amazing flowers?

Thanks again everyone!

For those timid of "Hites", I've been told that there are a lot of flowers near the River at the campground at Briceburg. The campground is closed to auto traffic, but my source says that you can walk in.

The rain refreshes the flowers, does not "dim" them. This weekend is supposed to be sunny and warm - enjoy!
