It's nice in these hard economic times for grocery stores to offer great deals. But...our recent experiences at Vons has been very alarming. They offer a mix and match deal where you get extra discounts after buying certain items. On three occasions this past week they tried to have us pay with the discounts not showing up. Then they play dumb, say "it must be your card "and so on. We have contacted corporate, and filed a complaint with state officials after finding that it was happening to others. Has it happened to you? Please help

We have used Von's since they built here, have always thought Raley's was too expensive. But did you see Raley's add last week - they had some great deals. My husband does most of the shopping and didn't believe me, but he looked and he did shop both locations and did a great job.

I have shopped their sales, but I feel I never get the "sale". I come home thinking "what just happened", so I stick to Raleys where the people aren't rude and you know them by their name, and visa versa.

People as in employee's or people as in customers?? I've never had a rude "employee" at either store. Now when the bus load of tourists are dropped off....I wait until they've vacated the premisis!!

I was in there the other day (three or four days ago) and the cashier told me my $5. wasn't coming up... so she subtracted it manually. At the time I had no idea of what she was talking about, but after reading the paper I understood.
I shop at both Vons & Raleys, depending upon what I need & at both stores I know their names, and surprising, they know mine. What's even more surprising is when they ask about my grandchildren, by name! (This usually happens at Vons, cause that's where my daughter shops)

Maybe I'm being a little harsh over my own experience with Vons. When they had the Cancer drive on and were asking patrons if they wanted to contribute to the cause at the check out, a young man didn't ask me. (If they didn't ask you, you were entitled to a liter of soda) I asked the young man why he haden't asked us and he said "just go over and get a liter of soda". Well, I didn't want a free liter of soda, and explained to him I'm a cancer survivor and I didn't appreciate his attitude. More I thought about it, madder I got. Went back into the store & spoke with the Mgr. I know, this kid was probably tired of asking every customer, but it was his job and I'd bet he doesn't have anyone close to him that has had cancer either! Oh dear, mad again. Be careful with fingers!

To afford groceries we go to three stores every week. We go specifically for sales. We have to. And rude behavior isn't too much to take...been through the same wringers as everyone. The specific sale I'm referring to is generated by the Von's head office. When we contacted them directly they we're condescending and smug. Like all institutions there is no accountability. We do feel that Raley's is more friendly, but in regards to savings, we must go to all stores...regrettably.

I concur........I appreciate it when they seem happy that you are shopping at their store so they can keep their jobs.

I never had an issue with either store. I mostly shop Von's and they know me and alway's are will ing to go out of their way to get items for me that I cannot lift when needed. They also know me by name and I would imagine that every businees can get a bad apple that can have a bad attitude once in a while. Sometimes when shopping at Vons Iit would feel like I was on a new car lot and every few minutes someone would approach me and ask "are you finding everything you need?" I know that that is part of their job and they are tested quite often by the secret shoppers. I know over at Raleys that if you pick the wrong checkout line you can get stuck there for 10 mins or so hearing fishing stories from a certain someone LOL. I know her intentions are good and she is very nice but it is your choice of which line you want so no harm there :) some people love to chat like that but I like to get in and out so my frozen foods don't thaw.

I also have discovered that you really have to watch what they charge you at Von's. Always read all the information on a sign advertising a sale by the products. It may not even relate to the product next to it. Many a time I have picked up something that the sign said $1.99 and be charged $3.99. When questioned the clerk would say that sign doesn't mean that product. Well, take the sign down then! Also my pet peeve is all the dogs you will see in Von's which is against health department regulations. I even saw an employee in there commenting that her dog shouldn't be there! Yet there he was. Raley's has a big sign saying no dogs.

 I so know who you are talking about...I stay clear of that line too!!
You know something I try to remember when people are snappy or not in a very good mood....I have no idea what kind of day they've had...maybe they just found out someone in their family has passed....just received a diagnosis of somthing bad, friends/family were in an accident something that we would have no way of knowing....Instead of getting angry at the person because you are not being treated in the manner of which you feel you should be, try saying a small little prayer that God may bring them peace for whatever they are having to endure at the moment that is causing them to be this way. I will say to them as I'm leaving...I hope you have a better day...with a smile on my face, not a scowl. They usually smile and say thanks!
I know for a fact that I've had my days of not being pleasant and I hope that people understand "it's not about them"...it's about whatever is occupying the snappee's mind at the time. Before anyone says...it's their JOB to be nice to me...yes that maybe true and if you can honestly say that you've never been snappy at anyone at the wrong time then by all means I bow to you.

No bowing necessary Boo Boo, I totally understand having bad/emotional days at work, but when you deal with the public they don't understand. Sometimes you may need to put those emotions on the back burner. I do try to cheer people up and to have a better day, but with this particular checker he should of been stocking shelves and not dealing with the public. There was no way of cheering this guy up, he didn't want to be there and it was obvious.

I can not stand Von's. I will gladly pay an extra quarter or dime per product for friendly service and no club card. Raley's has meat with no hormones or antibiotics added (in the cow or after), better priced organics.

The disconcerting thing is the sale is computer generated from the home store' If the customer doesn't watch it they lose $5, ten, fifteen dollars. Multiply that by so many stores and Vons has garnered a lot of money for what was supposed to be a sale. Oh well it's just money.

Putting emotions on the back burner maybe easy for some but I can tell you I sure am not one of them!! Maybe he didn't want to be there...maybe he asked the boss to go home, to stock shelves to be anywhere else but in the public eye and was told No we're short handed....granted as you stated the "public doesn't understand" that's what I said about you have no idea what the person is dealing with...I'm just trying to say I don't take it personal if I get a snappy person. It's not as if it happens day in and day out...at least it's not to me. If you think we have 'snappy/rude' people up there try being down here in Fresburg...whew...sometimes I can't wait to run back up the hill and have some nice friendly faces who know me by name!

Heck for that matter let's make a convoy :D I wonder if they put a limit on how much you can get at one time? If you had a Motorhome, a Boat and some Offroad vehicles that would be awesome!!

That makes sense if you are already in town with both cars, or live close to the gas station. Otherwise, the gas driving there and back may not be worth the savings. ;)

Before they set the Maximun rule I took my truck, boat had my wife drive her car and also filled gas cans, this is when the gas was around $4 per gallon and I had some saved up. that was when it really paid off. Now they have a Maximum per discount.

I find Vons and Raleys way way too costly! I find it cheaper to do shop after work in Fresno, thus saving an extra trip. Dog food at Vons is DOUBLE of what I would pay in Fresno. I know we should be shopping locally, but how local is Vons really? Sure they employ locals, but the profits go to corporate somewhere in LA or some far off place. In these pisspoor economic times, I have to count my pennies, so shopping at Vons Oaky is just too much. I use the local mkt here in YLP to buy stuff when I need this or that for cooking etc.

It is estimated that 40% of money spent at chain stores (according to a local Fresno station last night) stay within the local economy. If the store is owned locally, even more will remain in local circulation.

And let's not forget about the sales tax you pay. If you are buying in Madera then Madera is benefiting from these taxes...you are supporting the police, fire and everything else that those taxes help pay for. If we don't support the local businesses then pretty soon we'd have a ghost town with a HUGE number of unemployed workers. I work in Fresno as well but I still shop up here with the exception that I go to Sam's club every 3 weeks to buy dog food/cookies. I rarely if ever go shopping down there for anything else...I can, for the most part, get everything I need in my local stores.
