We took my son to Oka's for his birthday last March. They put on quite a cute little birthday 'show'. Since we're from the L.A. area, we have been spoiled with Benihana's restaurant (at least monthly) for years & when we came to NF we were happy to see Oka listed in the business directory.
Although small, they do offer a variety. A Teppan table, traditional tables & a sushi bar. Just be sure to request which specific table you want when you are making reservations.
The teppan table was good, but portions seemed a bit small. Nothing compares to the Benihana dressing for the salad, but Oka does a good job.
The staff was friendly & fun, and we had a really good time. Maybe if we didn't have an expectation, the food would of seemed better, but while I wouldn't call it excellent, it was good. The sushi I had was presented well & tasted fresh, my husband had calamari & was presented in such a way that my son (15) wanted to try it. When my husband went out for a smoke, my son was sneaking it off of his plate.
I couldn't get reservations around a holiday (2/14), so I would suggest if the dinner is for anything special, make reservations early.

Thanks. I am used to Yoshino's Japanese Steakhouse and Restaurant in Clovis (or almost to Clovis). Have gone there for years and my family really likes it. They put on a great show and we have never had a bad meal there, although haven't been there in the last year. Was looking for a place closer to home so to speak, may try Oka's. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink2.gif

I thought Oka's was pretty good but it still doesn't compare to Yoshino's.....if you go to Oka's expecting it to be like Yoshino's...I think you will be disappointed. But it is good and worth it not to have to drive to Fresno every timne you want great Japanese food.

Whatever you do, Enjoy it!! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/grin2.gif

I find Oka's to be outstanding I have never had a bad meal there, I always do Teppan Style, and always get the shrimp and filet mignon, or even the lobster...yummy.... in the Bay area we have a Benihana's right down the street and used to go every other weekend, ya never know if its going to be good or not...I don't care about their show I'd rather have a good meal.

Wow! I didn't know that the Bay Area had a Benihana's. I have only been to the one down south (LA area) and have always found it to be wonderful.

I enjoy Oka's, as well.

Hi, this is in answer to Sandman. The Benihana in Japantown is excellent. Also the restaurant in the Mijako Inn is used by locals all the time because of the special Hot Pot, do not know the correct term where various meats and vegetables come out on a tray and you cook them to your own specifications. Whole families are there just for that. Julia

Cool Dodie! I'll try out Mijako Inn some time.

Has anyone been to Oka since the change of ownership? Is it still as great as it was? Are they changing anything?

My dinner plans got postponed, so I ended up going to Oka with a few buddies. The food was good, the prices are still good and the service rocks! I wish they were open for lunch.

My wife & I both enjoy Oka. We use to go often for lunch. I wonder how it makes a decent profit being open only from 4 to 9pm.

Sometimes that is the best way to run a restaurant. The NGI restaurant used to be open 7 days a week, and was losing alot of money. Once we went down to 5 nights a week, we had a better handle on employee wages, (which also brought down taxes and insurance fees) and food costs. We found that much of the local business that would normally come up on a Monday or Tuesday, came on Sunday or Wednesday nights and we finally were able to make a profit.
