I'm VERY unhappy with Doc's Towing - which wants to charge us $800 for towing our stolen trailer which was found about 10 to 20 miles from their location in Oakhurst.

Have you had experience with them? What was your experience like?

Well how far did you want them to tow it. I think that 800.00 is a bit much but I am sure we are not hearing the hole story

Eight hundred dollars? Come on, get real. There is no way that is right! Are you sure that is the amount you were quoted? Was the trailer down a huge embankment or something? This is the same trailer we had a topic about right?

Edit: I just read your update on the stolen trailer topic. BTW, 10-20 miles is a big difference especially when you are talking about a tow. It doesn't seem like you have gone to see where the trailer was/is. I still don't think it all sounds right.

thats why you get AAA Plus. 4 free tows a yr.... up to 100 miles. It has saved my bacon many a times.

you want a cr*ppy towing company? Call Bulldog in Fresburg.

I have never had a problem with them but then again I do have AAA.

We didn't ask them to tow it. We had no choice. It was a recovered stolen vehicle.

And yes, apparently it was stuck quite a ways back in the brush. Even so, $800? Eight hundred?

Well yea it is pretty outrageous but look at it this way...you got your trailer back.

Did they catch the guys who stole it?

Since the Sheriff can pull up the owner from registration, wouldn't it be nice if they first contacted the owner and gave them a time to respond by before calling a tow company. This would give the owner of the vehicle a chance to arrange their own method of removal without all the outrageous towing and storage fee. The owner of the vehicle is already a victim of theft, why make it worse for them. But, I guess that makes too much sense. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/bonk.gif

Yeah. Look how much Michelle had to pay to get her Jeep back after it was recovered from theft.

They didn't catch the folks who stole it.

But in many ways its lucky we got it back. Apparently the theives were living in it on someone's property. There were several other stolen cars and trucks there. The owner of the property apparently hadn't visited it for something like twenty years; but, this past week decided to visit because he's thinking of selling. He saw all the vehicles and called the Sheriffs.

They did get some prints from the vehicles.

Note -- now these low lifes need somewhere else to camp out. Keep your eyes open.

As for the tow charge: They charged us for 6 days storage. And the only reason we found out it was there was because we received a notice from the Highway patrol - not Doc's towing. Doc's told us, "we don't have to send notification for 48 hours." At the end of that time they apparently contacted a lien company, and entrusted them to contact us. Supposedly they sent a registerd letter. I asked them to provide us with the signature receipt from this registered letter but they couldn't. They did knock off the charge for the last day of storage, because when we came to pick it up it couldn't be moved because the darn theives had slashed both tires just to add insult to injury!

Sounds like your beef should be with Highway Patrol. When we recovered stolen vehicles where I worked, we always tried to contact the registered owner so that they could make their own arrangements for towing if they wanted. If we couldn't contact them, then we contacted a tow company. As for the tow charges, sounds like about normal for what is being charged nowadays, especially if they had to go in on a dirt "road" and tow it out with two slashed tires, that's not a normal, everyday, "just hook it up and tow it off" job. I've dealt with Doc's a couple of times up here and have found them to be fair. Sorry for what has happened. Unfortunately the victims pay for what the crooks do, and rarely, if ever can the crooks be made to make restitution if they get caught.

Well to me it is not too far out of line. Some years back I got the old suburban stuck to the belly pan 50 yards off the road. Off road recovery $400 add to it the tow for 18 miles at another $400. This was back in about 94. . The big rip off is if they call it an off road recovery. That is were they hit you big time. Now the not letting ya know they had it that is another story and one I would have a grip about

Your trailer was the cargo trailer recovered off of road 620 , wasn't it? Were you aware that 2 other tow companies were contacted first, and refused to provide service because of the location? Docs towing agreed to do the tow, and sustained damage to thier truck recovering the vehicles. Not that they passed on the damage to you, but the recovery wasn't an easy one. It wasn't a tow, it was a recovery.
