Just got back from a 'secret' swimming hole. It was incredible...
I actually jumped from a cliff (OK, a small cliff) into the water below! I know some pictures were taken, I sure would like to see them.
The spot was amazing, the water crystal clear & when the Thunderclouds came in bringing thunder & rain, it was awesome.
Glad the Scooby could handle the road, but I had a fearless leader to follow...
Heres a clue as to where we were... and, yes, thats Davy going off the high jump...

Would I be able to get there and get to the water to swim? or is it to steep?

Dodgergirl
Jul 22, 2006, 08:07 AM
The trail down is steep, but if you go slow, you could do it. Coming back up is harder, but you just gotta take it slow. There's only a couple spots where the trail is actually steep, and then only for a few feet. I was out of breath coming up, but Davy ran the trail carrying an ice chest. He actually ran...
Theres large flat rocks to sit on and a cool shallow pool with a waterfall for swimming. Then there is the jump, which, you could do, and a rope to help you up the side of the boulder. Water shoes helped me, or tennis shoes.
Gorgeous scenery all around, and a few biting flies, so repellent is reccommended.
We can pick an afternoon to go if you want, it'll take about an 45 minutes from Oakhurst,
maybe we could get a bunch of us to go.
Let me know.

Once you have seen one swimming hole you have seen them all.

Chem101
Jul 23, 2006, 07:12 AM
OK.... I was thrown off by an earlier response. This swimming hole has to be on Lewis Creek. It is the only creek of sufficient size in the area to create that size of swimming hole. Based on Surfus' input, this has to be Red Rock Falls or Corlieu Falls. I'm surprised though. Neither look as big as Angel Falls or the Washing Machine on Willow Creek based on the Google Earth images.... This is fun http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

It's not Red Rock Falls. I've been there...no "hole" for swimming. Corlieu Falls would be more steep hiking than Dodgergirl described though shorter trail than to Red Rock Falls and I wouldn't call it a swimming "hole" either. Though the falls (particularly Corlieu Falls) are worthy destinations in their own right. About 6 miles north of Oakhurst the Lewis Creek trailhead is where ya go for these two hikes. Head left for Red Rock or right for Corlieu.

OK... I admit it. I cheated. I pulled out my "Swiming Holes of California" book. This hole is called "Arrowhead" just below "Skinny Dip" The book says "For years Skinny Dip was a secret closely kept by the locals, especially Yosemite folk who get tired of summer crowds."

Based on where it is... I don't think anyone needs to worry about crowds.

Dodgergirl
Jul 23, 2006, 08:30 AM
Honestly, that's not the name I was told. I still think you're off by a few miles.

Nope, I don't think that's it either.

Chem101
Jul 23, 2006, 10:10 AM
All I can say is the pictures in the book match Dodgergirl's pictures perfectly, and the described location is in the same general area everyone's been hinting about.
The book calls the swimming hole on the first picture that Dodgergirl posted as "Arrow," and interestingly enough, it says few people skinny dip in the hole called "Skinny Dip" but skinny dipping is common at Arrow. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Jul 23, 2006, 10:32 AM
Oh, and another nickname for the location is "Big Creek" according to the book http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif Does that ring a bell?

Talked to a handfull or more locals that have grown up in and around the swimming hole we invaded and none of them recognized any of the names from the book. Hmmmmm....perhaps the locals lied to the book authors to keep them off track!!
